| Synopsis: | The Cowboy Western is one of the oldest and most respected genres of film. In The Duel I am paying tribute to the defining scene of every Cowboy Western, the duel at high noon.
In the beginning of The Duel, the hero is waiting for his opponent to show. When the villain arrives, only a glance and a nod are needed to signal that it is time to start the duel.
In a classic western showdown, the two cowboys stand back to back and take ten paces before turning to face each other one last time. Then the clock strikes noon, they draw their weapons and fire.
The Duel, is not about finding out who wins. Rather, it is about respecting the Cowboy Western, and the people who made that genre so very memorable. To respect this genre it is necessary that one sticks to the classic styles and fundamental principles set down in the older films, but to also expand and approach it with your own unique point of view. This will be accomplished several ways in The Duel.
The fundamental principles and classic style will be accomplished in the script. The story, while simple, involves one villain and one hero facing off in classic western style. Also, a clock keeps time and announces the arrival of high noon.
To approach The Duel with a unique style and point of view many techniques in both production and postproduction will be applied. In production, many close-ups are shot to draw attention to emotion and specific actions or events. Wider shots are used to set up the location. In post production the clock is used to heighten the senses of time, urgency and the impending climax. Split screen, as well as cropping will be used to draw attention to simultaneous actions, and also to heighten the audiences emotions. Quick cuts and wonderful music all come together to make The Duel. |
