Boat Basin Caf 30min, English, Documentary (Hi-Def). P:David A. Ludwig, D:David A. Ludwig - ... how a hunk of rock from the Robert Moses era got to be one of the hottest tables in NYC! - Frederic Law Olmsted, Central Park architect, created Riverside Park in New York City in the 1870s, but the railroad was still a blight on the neighborhood. In the 1930s, Robert Moses widened the park, covered the railroad and added his own concrete touches, including the Rotunda at 79th Street. The original design featured seaplanes landing, a fountain and a caf. But history called Mr. Moses elsewhere, and without his touch, the Rotunda, and the idea of a caf, lapsed into chaos. In the 1980s, Charles McKinney became Riverside Park Administrator and, by clever use of public funds and community involvement, restored the Park. In the 1990s, McKinney turned to savvy restaurateur Mike ONeal to make the caf a reality. The 79th Street Boat Basin Caf is now one of the hottest tables in New York City during the spring, summer and fall. |
