Monologue rules

Another glaringly laymen's question from me, but what are the "rules" of picking your own audition material? i.e: length of speech, type of play it should come from, WHERE can I find good monologues??
Help!?

Hi Leigh

Most of the time they'll ask for two contrasting speeches (normally one Shakespeare and one contemporary) two minutes in length.

The best advice I can give is not go for anything that's done too much. Casting directors don't want to sit through the same speech delivered by different people time and time again.

Also, if you do something original, then they won't be comparing you with some great actor they saw do the same speech in the past....

Hope that helps.

2 minutes or thereabouts-
also make sure it has a beginning, middle and end.

A good way to find them is read A LOT of plays. You might even consider contacting new writers for material (I'm currently writing a series of monologues specifically with the audition market in mind).

Yeah...try to avoid the oft repeated shakespeares!
When I was auditioning for drama schools I liked to run sweepstakes with other auditionees on how many Violas/Rosalinds would crop up during the day.
At least when I red those speeches it got a reaction!
