Agents

Hi everyone,
This is going to sound like a stupid question but how do you go about securing an agent? I have been acting for years professionally without one but obviously if I want to take a step up in my career I'm going to need one! I have sort of dipped my toe in, by sending out headshots or ringing places but always with the same response "we're not taking on new clients" Maybe thats the way to do it and I'm not trying hard enough but it feels like I might be missing something? I'd really love any advice or personal stories that could shed some light for me.
Thanks!!

Hi Leigh

I'm no expert, but from what I gather, the best way to get a good agent is by doing a show case. That way you can invite any agencies that you're interested in along to see you, and then hopefully they'll turn up, think you're marvellous and you sign on the dotted line.

Otherwise, another way may be by sending your showreel to agencies.

No decent agency will sign you up without seeing you perform.

Cheers

Sue

Leigh,
Sometimes agents hold auditions so it may be worth sending your details to a good number in the hope that you reach some that operate in this way.
Generally though it would be advisable to send a showreel aswell or if you're in a play to invite them along.
There has been quite a few debates on here with good advice to if you have a look back through old threads you should come accross them.
Good luck,
Helen

I have applied to agents through this site and they have all asked me to meet with them. And I dont have that much training experience and am only just joining spotlight now. If they like your look they will ask you to audition for them.

I would say it's all bout perseverance with agents. A showcase is probably one of the best/easiest ways for a lots of them to come and see you, but you may find also, as I did, that they could call you in and have you do a piece to camera. I wouldn't think anyone would take you on without seeing you perform in some capacity. It does depend on if they are taking new people but also if you look like someone already on their books-there's not much point in having two people who will always be going for the same roles on your books. And as far as CCP goes, I've found that I've sent off for a lot of stuff from here and that the people are really so friendly and helpful-you can pretty much ask any question without feeling stupid and generally someone will always answer even if it's just to say 'go back and look at XXX for a similar thread'. Best of luck with your efforts!

yes basically the woman i met with, was rude, unprofessional, she was calling people and emailing during the meeting, she tried to intimidate me with false facts about casting directors like the hollyoaks casting director only casting in London which is the biggest pile of s**t ive ever heard, so i called the next day and complained to susi earnshaw herself about what a waste of time the whole thing was, she (luckily) was really nice.

I find them to be less scary than I first assumed. Though I didn't go to my appointment with susi earnshaw. I thought that soul management was nice but they didn't take me on(they dont know what they are missing)so a waste of time but yeah most agents I have met are sound.
