Motivation

The Motion Picture art form has been my passion for as long as I can remember. There has never been a time that I have wanted to do anything else but make movies. I have developed my understanding of films and how they are made by exploring not only the camera department but also all aspects of filmmaking. My experiences of making films both in and out of university have fuelled my ambition of becoming a cinematographer, to tell stories and produce my own films.

My first professional foray into the industry came soon after graduating from film school. I applied for a camera trainee position on a film but didn’t get the job and was offered a stand-in job instead. However I quickly proved my worth to the production beyond my role and was quickly put in charge of Video Village playback and as a 2nd camera department trainee by the DOP Ed Wild for the remainder of the shoot.

Recently I have been gaining much experience with the new RED ONE digital cinema camera system. I was initially sceptical of the camera, having always preferred the look of film, my opinion swiftly changed! After assisting on a short and a few minor promos, I completed a feature film project that used the camera. During the project I was trained to use the RED throughout it’s entire workflow, from preparation through operation to uploading and managing the data. I was also fortunate enough to gain basic DIT skills.

These experiences have only contributed to solidify my passion for films and desire to make them. The majority of my experience comes from video shoots although my primary interest is to improve my celluloid knowledge and to improve my camera and lighting skills. I view every project as a learning experience and I am always eager to improve my skills. Above all I consider and am considered to be very professional. After spending my first year in this business, all I can say is that there is nothing else I’d rather do.
