Artist Statement:
As a filmmaker it is my goal to have a hand in the new cinema that is currently springing up in the USA and other countries. I believe that my writing style and embracement of the collaborative method of filmmaking will aid the “indie-wood” movement here in the UK and I hope to achieve this in a uniquely British way. My work revolves around themes of altered states and pathetic heroes and through this I am hoping to blend naturalistic performances with surreal settings and events. I draw much of my inspiration from the writer Charlie Kaufman and from director Wes Anderson and through this inspiration I am aiming to achieve an identifiable style of work that I can call my own.
Personal Profile:
I have worked on many short films during my time at university, including working with the London Film School (LFS) on a number of occasions. In fact I believe that my time working with the students of the LFS is a testament to the amount of passion I have for this industry. For example I began my first shoot as a boom operator and was subsequently offered the job of sound-recordist on the next film. To get the job I taught myself how to record sound by hiring an old Nagra III, reading the manual and recording small sound pieces (dialogue, music, etc.) until I had cracked it. This only took me a day and I am now a very competent soundman. On the shoot however we were not using the old reel-to-reel Nagras, the producer had hired out a new digital sound mixer and I had to learn how to use the equipment from scratch on the morning during rehearsals, the sound still came out clean. I am very proud of this achievement and I think it proves:
a. How quickly I can learn something if it is required of me.
b. My natural affinity for film equipment.
c. My determination to get what I want.
d. My communication and networking skills
I believe all these things, although originally applied to a career in Sound, translate well to the role of Director and will allow me to create works of both artistic and financial merit.
