Personal Statement:
Having just completed my BA Media Arts degree at Royal Holloway University of London, attaining First Class Honours, I am looking to exercise my creative flair through pursuing a career in the field of media production. I have trained for three years in the use of the television studio as part of my degree, and also have a range of experience working on professional studio and location productions through independently acquired work experience, including feature film.
Work Experience:
Art Department Assistant – Redhouse Productions – Bromley by Bow. June 2008.
As the key art department assistant on the production, my responsibilities included sourcing materials, painting props, set dressing and remaining on set throughout the shoot to assist with any problems that arose. Enthusiasm and motivation were useful qualities on this shoot, as the days were extremely long and tasks were often repetitive. It also required me to think and work independently as I was often left alone with minimal instruction.
Runner – The Commonage – London. March/June 2008.
As the runner on a music video shoot, my responsibilities were extremely varied, ranging from gripping for a dolly shot and arranging lunch for cast and crew to sourcing certain products requested by the cast that were not easily obtainable. I really enjoyed the challenging nature of the role, which tested my problem solving skills. This position led to the company hiring me as a paid runner for a subsequent corporate video.
Costume Assistant - CBBC – Various locations. September/October 2007
Working on Chucklevision gave me a great deal of experience working on location and dealing with the difficulties that it can pose as the entire three week shoot was location based. As the costume assistant, it was my responsibility to ensure that costumes for both principal cast and supporting artists were pressed and to hand when needed. I was also required to make small repairs and alterations, as well as observing for continuity. This developed my organisational skills as I was often required to multitask under pressure.
Art Department Assistant - Aramid Entertainment – Pinewood Studios. March/April 2007
Working on such a large scale production as ‘Incendiary’ was an eye-opening experience. My responsibilities including distressing and ageing props and creating a large scale fence for a football stadium in the aftermath of a bomb, which was extremely challenging given the resources provided. The importance of deadlines and budgets were very much apparent, but the end result was very much worth the hard work put in. Communication and team work skills were vital in order to ensure that instructions given were understood and employed accurately by the team I was working with.
Junior Office Assistant - CSC Shopping Centres. September 2003
As a junior office assistant, my duties included answering telephones through the switchboard, writing articles for the quarterly magazine publication, sourcing information for the website, photocopying, filing and other general office duties.
Education
Media Arts – First Class Honours.
Royal Holloway University of London. September 2006 – July 2009
I believe the diverse creative, technical, interpersonal and production skills I have gained from my degree will be invaluable to me in almost any career in the television industry, as it has given my an overview of the entire production process. Amongst some of the skills I have learnt are: camera operation, lighting design and execution, set design, sound recording and design, post production editing and sound, chroma key and luma key operation, and sourcing and casting talent.
A Levels
Palmers College, , Essex. September 2004 – July 2009.
Media: A, Law: A, Mathematics: A, AS Further Mathematics: B, AS Critical Thinking: B.
GCSEs
The Grays School, Essex. September 1999 – July 2004.
12 GCSEs obtained including A/A* in English, Maths and Triple Science.
Other Work Experience:
Barrista - Starbucks – Staines. April 2005 - Present
Having been with the company for four years whilst studying, my abilities as a team worker have developed greatly. I have learnt that clear communication and motivation are the two key factors to successful
teamwork, which I understand is a vital component in the field of production. This role has also developed my skills in multitasking and thinking on my feet, as it is often a fast paced and stressful environment.
Runner – The Commonage – March 2008
After voluntarily helping out on an earlier shoot, The Commonage offered me a paid position as a runner for a commercial video shoot. My duties involved assisting with the smooth running of the shoot, such as labelling tapes, arranging lunch and liaising with the location representative.
Betting Assistant - Tote Pool – Royal Ascot - June 2008/2009
This position involved handling large amounts of money and providing a high level of customer service.
Party Shop Assistant/Balloon Artist – The Party Place, Lakeside, Thurrock. January 2004 – April 2006
As a key holder, I would often open and close the shop single handed. This demonstrates my reliability and trustworthiness, as well as my ability to work successfully independently.
Promotions – Casual
Working on campaigns, I meet members of the public and give free samples and/or encourage them to buy a product. This requires a strong sense of independence and self-motivation, as most tasks are undertaken individually.
