Relevant experience:

Work within the Bristol University Drama Department:

I have just graduated with a BA (Hons) in Drama from Bristol University.

From the beginning of my degree I was introduced to stage management and I have consistently been involved in the department in this role.

I have worked in small-scale shows including –

  • 'Attempts on Her Life' – this show contained many technical elements such as live video feeds and projections. I had to source the equipment and coordinate all elements whilst calling the show.
  • 'The Bald Prima Donna'  - this was a small theatre show but with a strong aesthetic. I called the show, sourced props and collected all required equipment.
  • The Waltz Invention'. – This show required actors to draw on the floor, stamp on boxes and throw flour. This meant that at the end of each show the white floor had to be repainted and new props made. With just a few crew members we all worked together and found solutions to the problems we faced.

I have also worked on larger scale productions in the Wickham Theatre –

'The Crucible'- in my first year I worked on this show as a fly coordinator. I had a team of four up on the fly floor; I was on cans and directed the team according to the cues.

  •  'The Wonderful World of Dissocia'. – as DSM for the biggest student show of the year in the department, I worked with the SM to source props, put together schedules, run the technical and dress rehearsals and called the show each night. I worked well with this responsibility, working on individual tasks but also as a collective.

  • ‘The Oresteia’ –I worked closely with Martin White on a performance of this Greek Trilogy. As well as acting I was head stage manager for the project – this included working with two other stage managers, running production meetings, putting together the production schedule, marking out rehearsal spaces and keeping up communication with all technical areas to keep the piece coherent and moving forward.

After working practically in this area for nearly three years I have gained a good reputation and have felt personal development in each project. I believe that skills I accumulated within this role are transferable into the area of TV/film production which I wish to pursue a career in.

Summer 2007 - Assistant Events Manager for Cumbria County Council.

I independently sought work experience and worked for two months with Cumbria Council's food and crafts division called 'Made in Cumbria'. My role was to help organize before, during and after the events put on by the council for local food and craft suppliers. I worked both administratively in the department’s office and at the events themselves.  I integrated well into the team and was soon gaining more responsibility as I proved myself capable.

Written feedback I received from this experience is available upon request.

Summer 2008 - Edinburgh Festival - Stage Manager for Take Note Theatre Company.

Two graduates from Bristol University set up their own theatre company last year and I was asked to be the company’s stage manager. We took two musicals 'I Love you, you're perfect, now change' and the company-written musical 'Jet Set Go'. It was a sell-out show gaining rave reviews.

We were there for the whole festival and from the beginning I liaised with the theatre (George Square) working with both our and their requirements. I looked after the actors and props and took on the role of lighting operator for both shows. This meant that after I had set all props, tested equipment, called the actors etc I then worked with the technical team and gained experience in other technical areas. From this I gained an awareness of how each member of a team, when working together is equally valuable in creating a quality end product.

2009 Industrial Placement at Shakespeare at The Tobacco Factory – Assistant Stage Manager and assistant Theatre Administrator.

I chose to take on two roles during this placement in order to work to the familiar strengths I knew I already had but also challenge myself with something new i.e. theatre administration.

Having two roles meant that I constantly multi-tasked and communicated with many different areas of the production company.

A copy of the feedback I received from this placement is available upon request.

2009 – Edinburgh Fringe Festival – Press Assistant at C Venues.

This summer I worked for a week as a press assistant in the largest venue at the annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Duties included proofreading, engaging with clients and taking responsibility for the press desk, where I fielded calls and queries from clients.

I joined the office for this short time a few days before the festival began. The office was hectic, and in the pressurized environment a clear head had to be kept and communication had to be maintained within the team. I found that after only a day colleagues began to give me more and more responsibility, and I believe I proved myself as an essential part of the team.
