Having spent much of my younger life with a passion for creative writing and storytelling I was rarely seen without a pen in my hand. By the age of seven I’d already begun recreating small-scale ‘stage’ versions of classic films such as The Flintstones Movie and The Terminator, much to the surprise of my parents.
Years later I left school to travel the United States after teaching guitar music to children in New York. It was there at the world-reknowned French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts that I was fortunate enough to gain the opportunity of developing my writing skills amongst some of Hollywood’s most legendary screenwriters and their colleagues. I refined my knowledge of comedy and dramatic writing as well as working alongside some of the country’s most promising talents.
Upon returning to the UK I began writing and producing audio comedy shows for the Podshow/Mevio network including the award-winning Great Britain? which spanned across four successful series, as well as RE:vulva and Commentary Box. Whilst recently working with television production company The Foundation I began writing my original comedy-fantasy series Jez. Currently I write, direct and produce comedy shorts and music videos for my company Milk’s Gone Bad Productions with co-founder Nigel Clarke of CBBC, Nickelodeon, ITV and the West End’s Stomp!
I currently reside in Kent where I continue to develop Jez as well as writing my first comedy feature-film. I also write satirical articles for WordPress.com which can be found at PerryJohnWordpress.com.
Writing Experience
Donny’s Boy (TBC) - Feature Film (2009)
British comedy in which an underpaid and unappreciated junior of a London marketing firm begins to reassess his life with destructive consequences, upon the arrival of a larger than life office temp.
Digress “Get Down” - Music Video (2009) Milk’s Gone Bad Productions
Shot entirely on location inside the O2 arena this promotional video for London-based band Digress involved the extensive use of some of Britain’s most qualified and distinguished BMX stunt bikers, free-runners, extreme skaters, break-dancers and basketball players to create an atmosphere never before seen in a music video. Starring championship stunt-biker Jack Meek, television’s Interlude and ZooNation as well as world-record breaking martial arts champion Chloe Bruce.
Jez - Original Comedy Series (2009)
Wholly original comedy script seeing a naive, portly, man-child Jesus’ return to modern-day Earth. The adventure begins when “Jez” and his new atheist friend Chris set off on a road trip across the country to save humanity, whilst dealing with various angels and demons along the way. Although controversial in subject matter the story, which spans over two series, is in fact a heartwarming comedy observing the growing relationship between a troubled man and his fish-out-of-water messiah friend.
Club HSM - Television Series (2009) Researcher - The Foundation Television Productions
Four part children’s television series for The Disney Channel based on the great success of the High School Musical franchise. Four young rising stars take it upon themselves to stage their own version of a popular High School Musical song. From dance routines to photoshoots to the enormous climax at Crystal Palace Sports Centre involving over 500 dancers and 300 extras. Starring Fame Academy choreographer Kevin Adams.
Skillicious - Television Series (2009) Researcher - The Foundation Television Productions
Filmed exclusively for the BBC this series put the spotlight on raising awareness of the importance of keeping children active by venturing outside the house and challenging themselves with new and exciting sports and activities. Series highlights included swimming with Olympic champion Mark Foster, tennis with Wimbledon victor Jamie Murray and studio performances with some of Britain’s most gifted sports personalities. Starring Nigel Clarke and Blue Peter’s Zoe Salmon.
Commentary Box - Original Audio Comedy (2008)Writer/Producer - The Mevio Network
Advancing on the idea of DVD audio commentaries each episode would see our two presenters watching a popular film and providing their own running commentary throughout. Listeners would then begin listening to the episode and watching the same film simultaneously providing a totally unique andentertaining experience for the audience. Episodes included Labyrinth [1986], Ghostbusters [1984] andPoltergeist [1982].
RE:vulva - Original Audio Comedy (2007-2008) Writer/Producer - The Mevio Network
Based on the huge success of its predecessor Great Britain?, this series saw the return of myself and my co-host Alex ‘Spud’ Lawrance and our quest to answer some of the universe’s biggest questions with the help of our listening audience.
Great Britain? - Original Audio Comedy (2006-2008)Writer/Producer - The Podshow Network/PodOmatic
Developing a hugely loyal fan-base over four series this show became a cult hit in the new era of freely accessible audio entertainment. Hosting alongside my colleague Alex ‘Spud’ Lawrance we would attempt to solve the questions, problems and ideas of our listeners with humorous output and the occasional celebrity contributor. In addition to several awards the show also received high praise from critics including PodFinder UK who claimed it to be “one of the funniest, most creative and original things you will ever spend your time on. Absolutely delightful!”.
In addition to these I also spent a majority of 2005 writing and editing French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts productions of Me & My Girl, Blood Brothers, Rumours, Les Miserable and The Who’s Tommy. All of which received great credit and appreciation.
