On top of my experience in a variety of full-time roles, I have experienced working in several different environments during work experience placements, voluntary work, and unpaid internship programs. An example of this includes shadowing a director at Hull Truck Theatre Company in the weeks prior to a national tour of a play. This not only exposed me to the pressures and difficulties in organising a large team, it also allowed me to take part in a large-scale creative process.
I have also worked for The Wave radio station in Blackpool, where my duties included administrative work, research, creating audio clips for use on air, and acting as an assistant to crew on air. In 2004 I worked for a video game company in Oxford and worked with a partner to build a cataloguing system and archive from the ground up for their use in storing a publication they had recently bought the rights to.
My University course emphasised a wide range of skills from media production to film history, and encouraged both active research methods and close interaction with students and lecturers including teamwork on presentation projects and in-depth debate on a range of issues. Parts of the course involved extensive use of image editing software such as Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. This built on my previous extensive experience of this kind of software in my personal life.
I have worked on multiple independent feature films and shorts in several roles, at different times as a producer, editor, actor, camera operator, and director.
The philosophy aspect of my degree encouraged critical thinking and creative solutions to problems. It also developed both my analytical and debate skills.
I have extensive experience with both Mac OS X and Windows and feel comfortable with current online trends and developing processes, from so-called ‘Web 2.0’ developments to the burgeoning social networking technologies. I use the following computer programs on a regular basis:
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
- Microsoft Works
- Adobe Premiere
- Adobe Photoshop
- Final Cut Pro
- Final Draft
Interests and activities
I’m an avid reader, with a broad taste in books both fiction and non-fiction. I love the cinema. In my free time I work with friends to produce short films for exhibition in various film festivals nationwide. I enjoy cycling, and a variety of sports. I write a little, and enjoy spending time with friends. I also love travelling when I can. I am currently learning to cook, and developing an interest in photography.
Work experience
2008 - 2009 Waterstones Manchester Deansgate Branch
Bookseller
Date employment commenced – October 2008
Position Held – Bookseller
Duties - During my time with the company I moved across several departments. I began as a basic bookseller and was quickly moved to customer orders, where I effectively took over the running of the department. The emphasis was on customer service, and my main duty at all times was to attend to the needs of any customer in the shop and offer them high quality, personal service. Additionally I dealt with ordering stock, calling suppliers and publishers to chase orders and research details on publications, dealt with customer complaints, helped organise events, and worked on large scale displays within the shop. I had the opportunity to work both behind the scenes in the business and also in a more involved, customer-orientated role that has involved building relationships with customers and extensive sales work.
Reason for leaving – I only ever viewed my time with the company as temporary, and I now feel that I am ready for a fresh challenge in a more demanding role.
2007 - 2008 Lampeter Film Society
Between 2007 and 2008 I voluntarily restarted the local University’s film club during my spare time. The purpose of the club had been to screen films, both new and old, for students and local residents in exchange for a voluntary charitable contribution. It was not scheduled to run for the academic year until I took the reins. For the majority of the year I ran it on my own, being responsible for booking screens, sourcing the films, creating posters and local advertising, attending and organising the screenings, and creating trailers for upcoming events or films. I also organised events, themed evenings and special screenings, as well as encouraging interactivity by utilising online social networks to allow students to suggest films and events they would like to be organised.
We had between two and four major screenings a week for which we had a regular attendance of between 50 and 100 people for each screening, which was an achievement given the small size of the town and the competing events on any given night. This number rose sharply throughout the year.
As the events became larger I had a couple of volunteers helping me, which meant that I had to organise a small team to ensure the society ran smoothly.
2005 – 2008 Capper and Co Spar Stores Lampeter Store
Supervisor
Date employment commenced – July 2005
Position Held – Supervisor
Duties – As a supervisor my duties included all those of the regular staff members (working on till, dealing with customers face to face, stocking the shelves, tidying the shop) and several additional tasks. First and foremost I was responsible for organising the other staff members and ensuring that the work being done is relevant and what is most urgently required. The appearance of the shop at the end of a shift was my responsibility, and I often helped implement new promotional displays. I handled large amounts of cash and was also responsible for counting the till totals and dealing with the safes in the evenings. I was also responsible for the ordering of stock for the shop. Customer complaints came directly to me, and I have experience with dangerous and drunk customers. I have also liaised directly with the police, both to aid them in apprehending offenders, and as a result of a violent incident or theft. I was involved heavily in the process of hiring new staff and training them.
At night I was responsible for locking the shop and ensuring that everything was locked and powered down.
Training – I was trained on the job to perform all necessary tasks in my role, as well as some additional ones. I was also officially given a training course on customer service in addition to this. I was able to enhance my ability to work within a team as well as my ability to coordinate one. Additionally I was able to solve problems independently. Before I left, I was asked to join the Management Training Course with a view to being given a store manager role when one became available.
Reason for leaving – Moved to Manchester, August 2008
2004 – 2006 Black Flame Publishing (Now Defunct)
Proof Reader
During the first few years of University (and the year before) I supplemented my income with freelance proofreading work, the majority of which came from Black Flame Publishing. This largely consisted of my being sent manuscripts and being set a date to return them having highlighted any grammatical, spelling or more general errors. This vastly improved my reading speed and ability, teaching me to spot even minor mistakes in a piece, as well as improving my overall grasp of proper use of grammar in published items. It also gave me a chance to experience working to a deadline outside of a normal working environment and balancing that with independence.
Reason for leaving – Unfortunately I was forced to finish this work when I began another job and my studies became more involved.
