Moving Decisions.

Hi all,

Just looking for some advice and opinions.

I’m an actor that lives quite far from London. I have an opportunity to live in Reading, which is not far from London, which would mean cheap train tickets to and back from London when auditions occur.

However, I would be travelling up there with no job, as I’m not sure my current side-job would do a transfer to another city, which would mean I would need to pay 6-months rent upfront.

I’m a bit lost on what to do. I’d really like to go for it and be closer to auditions in London, but at the same time I can’t help but think if it’s best to stay where I am where it’s much cheaper to rent a flat, and just dive into my savings when I need to get to in-room auditions, rather than completing self-tapes most of the time. I’m just feeling a little conflicted and overwhelmed.

Hope this is alright to ask, as I’ve never asked anything on Mandy Casting before.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts and opinions.

Cheers for taking the time to read this.

Adam.

Hi

I’m kind of in the same situation

Am going out of my mind with boredom. London, as expensive and dangerous as it is, at least there’s a vibe.

There is a lot of work in London and being based there has its advantages with regards to acting. Am getting fed up with reading a casting call and then at the end it says “London based actors only”

With regards to theatre work… definitely better to have a base in London when there’s weeks/months of rehearsals and the actual run.

With the cost of living crisis… it’s definitely risky. I’m still debating whether or not to move.

There are rooms available for around 500 - 600 pounds a month through an agency on zoopla. Bills included.

But what do you do when you’re offered an acting job, have to give up your day job, then finish your acting job and find another day job?

Hi,

Thanks for your sharing your thoughts and opinions, this helps.

Yeah, that’s tricky too, when you’re offered an acting job and give up your side-job; then once you’re finished with the acting job, you then need another side-job if you don’t have any other acting work afterwards.

I remember seeing an interview with Kevin Bacon, who was in that position. I think he said he was working in a restaurant, was offered an acting job, completed it and then had to ask for his original restaurant job back, as he had no other acting jobs lined up afterwards.

I think it’s just taking a leap of faith, and hope that things will work out well. It’s also good to try and audition for other acting jobs whilst you’re in an acting job too, and at the same time apply for side-jobs too, just so that you’re extra prepared for anything.

It’s not easy but that’s why we are here, to keep trying and to work in an industry that we enjoy.

Hope this also helps.
