Highlights

In 2nd year of high school I was part of a Theatre company called Firefly Arts based in Livingston. I was part of their company for about 8 years.
With this company I have been in devised shows that have toured all round Glasgow and down in Manchester for Contacting the World Festival. I have also been in shows such as Dracula, Animal Farm and Blood Wedding. With Firefly Arts I had the opportunity to help direct Molière's Tartuffe. This taught me more about what goes into preparing a show than just preparing for a role.
While also being a part of Firefly I have also had 4 years of acting training from Edinburgh College, Fife College and University of the West of Scotland. While at College and University I have been taught more in depth about characterisation, devising and professionalism. While at Fife College I was cast as Romeo from Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet. This was a challenging role for me. I was also cast as Jack in Chatroom by Enda Walsh.
While at UWS I was cast as the main character, Axel, in our adaptation of Journey to the Centre of the Earth. This role pushed me as I was the main narrative that spoke to the audience but also had to 'jump' back into scenes and continue as nothing had happened. Axel was the main anchor point and guide for the audience through the chaos and commotion. I was given a mention in The Wee Review for my performance:
"Axel: played throughout by Matthew Jones, the production is really anchored by his performance as the reluctant young adventurer. With perfect comic timing, some pathos, and even a romance, he is the one constant for the audience. It’s a feat to provide a point of focus in a tsunami of chaos, but he achieves it." - Peter Munro, The Wee Review
While also studying I was part of a student film for one of the 4th year Performance students' final creative project. This was a 30 minute video written and shot by UWS students about a boy (John) that deals with a break up and finds himself addicted to a game that simulates real life. His friends warn him he is drifting from them and decide to do something about it. While in the game John has been influenced by another, masked, player. John is faced with turmoil as he is faced with the decision of his old friend or new, Reality or fantasy.
Finally, as an avid theatre goer I pride myself on seeing theatre where and when I can. I use going to the theatre as a stress reliever and a learning experience. I have learned a lot from the theatre I have seen whether it has helped me form an idea or a character it has always been a resource for my acting ability.
