About me
Since his professional debut at the Leeds Playhouse in 2004, Chris has shown charisma and versatility in a number of stage and screen productions. With both classical and contemporary roles to his name, he has developed a career as a reputable and assiduous actor working across a range of genres. In theatre, Chris has completed both UK tours and a host of highly-reviewed London productions. Reflecting on his performance as Eilert Lovborg in Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler at the Etcetera Theatre, The Times’ journalist Ruth Gledhill wrote “Charismatic and commanding on the stage, he is an actor to watch and it is not difficult to imagine this boy becoming something of a star.” His performance as the eponymous character in Hamlet at The Rose Playhouse gained him more outstanding reviews, such as that of Southwark News which stated “Chris Clynes as Hamlet really sets the stage alight… I relished his every word and spark of malevolence in his eyes.” Going from strength to strength in coveted roles, he took on the lead role in Macbeth in Pleasure Dome Theatre Company’s debut production at tourist hotspot The Valley of the Rocks in North Devon. His recent theatre work includes research and development projects for Tamasha Theatre Company and Kali Theatre, and most recently the production Enclosed Spaces, a collection of four new plays performed at The Golden Goose Theatre.
On television Chris played Anne Boleyn's alleged lover Mark Smeaton in BBC Select’s The Six Queens of Henry VIII, impressing with scenes of heartbreak, interrogation and torture. His work as a film actor has included many notable short films such as the Cannes Film Festival-selected Crossroads, an LGBT themed drama which saw him gain a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at Portsmouth International Film Festival, and as a young Lord in costume drama I Am Wallace, which won Best Historical Drama at the Screentest Festival. He also stars opposite Rebecca Root in the moving Eddie Elise which premiered at the BFI Flare Festival. Chris’s recent feature film, the World War II drama Battle Over Britain in which he plays the lead role, has just been released in UK cinemas.
