About me
Gregory Allen is a Daytime Emmy & Grammy award-winning documentary filmmaker and cinematographer who recently Directed & Co Produced the multiple Daytime Emmy winning series Pan y Circo for Amazon Prime Video with Diego Luna.He attended the Kent Institute of Art and Design in the United Kingdom and graduated with a First Class Honors Degree in Time Based Media Studies, before going on to complete a Post Graduate in Electronic Media Studies at Duncan of Jordanstone College of art, Dundee University, in Scotland.
During his time as a student he was awarded the Fuji Film Scholarship for his short film “Valentines Day” which he wrote and directed. His film went on to win three scholarship awards including most suitable film for commercial release.
After graduating he spent two years in London Soho as an Avid editor on multiple music videos and short films with Red Square Editing, including the classic video “Wannabe'' by the Spice Girls. He left for Mexico City in 1996 to edit the documentary series “Aventuera” for Channel 22, directed by Grace Quintenilla.
He settled in Mexico that same year and since then has been quietly making a name for himself as an innovative Director, Producer, Cinematographer and Editor. Between the years of 1996 and 2003 Gregory brought his knowledge of non linear editing and special FX to the Mexican commercials. Editing, posts producing and acting as the special FX supervisor on innumerable commercial campaigns, short films & documentaries throughout Mexico and Latin America.
In 2004 Gregory Co Directed, shot and edited the documentary film “El Amo del Lounge” for Canal Once TV about the legendary composer, band leader, musician and pioneer of stereo sound Juan Garcia Esquivel. The film was later show at the Havana Film Festival, Cuba in 2005.
In 2007 he shot, produced & directed his first feature length documentary “Papalotzin - The flight of the Monarch Butterfly”, which followed the magnificent 6000 km Monarch butterfly migration from Canada to Mexico in a microlight piloted by the Vico ¨Volador¨Gutierrez, the projects creator. Papalotzin won best documentary film at the Festival Internacional del Aire, FIA El Yelmo, Spain in July of 2008.
Throughout his career he has worked with most major TV networks as a producer, cinematographer, cameraman & editor. He was the BBC’s primary videographer in Mexico for over five years & also worked extensively for the likes of CNN, ABC, Discovery Channel, Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, Al Jazeera & CGTN.
He has covered some of the most significant newsworthy events in Central and Latin America over the past two decades. From hurricanes and climate disasters to Chavez’s demise, Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega only interview in 20 years by a foreign newsgroup, the Brazilian Olympics and World Cup, a coup d’etat de tar in Honduras in 2009, the aftermath of the Haiti Earthquake in 2010 and the Mexican war on drugs, to name just a few.
In 2011 & 2012 he was hired as a cinematographer, post producer and editor on the musically driven documentary film “Hecho En Mexico” directed by Duncan Bridgman.
In 2012 Gregory founded Plural Films in Mexico as an independent production company dedicated to creativity and innovation in documentary, film and music videos. Gregory’s work is characterized by his passion for documenting people's lives with an emphasis on raising environmental and cultural awareness.
Gregory has also Produced, Directed, shot and edited numerous music videos and music documentaries over the years for some of the biggest Central & Latin American acts. Including the likes of Julieta Venegas, DLD, Moenia, Ana Torroja, Pepe Aguilar, Sin Bandera, Nortec, Bostich and Fussible and Mexico's iconic band Cafe Tacvba. It was his music documentary about Café Tacvba “ El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco, la Película” that won him a Grammy in 2014.
In October 2018 he documented the arduous 4000 km journey of the Ramo's family with the Migrant Caravan from Chiapas to Los Angeles, CA. Gregory´s independent documentary film “Primero Dios¨is an ongoing production.
During 2019 & 2020 Gregory Directed and Co-Produced the multiple Emmy award winning series “Pan y Circo” for Amazon Prime Video, created and hosted by Diego Luna.
Gregory recently directed the Mexican chapter for Chris Hemsworth and Darren Aronofsky´s forthcoming Limitless docuseries for National Geographic, and was a Director and Cinematographer in Mexico for David Attenborough’s new Green Planet series for the BBC.
