About me
Robert is a broadcaster, filmmaker, and film historian with considerable international experience.Robert’s broadcasting experience includes producing and presenting radio programs, researching and writing features for radio, and appearing as an expert guest on radio and TV. His expertise includes film, popular culture, theology and the intersections between religion and culture. Robert’s broadcast awards include a Sony Gold and a New York Festivals World Gold Medal.
As a filmmaker, Robert has written and directed a number of short films. He sees film as a collaborative endeavour and is experienced at directing projects on a limited budget. In addition to directing projects, Robert is experienced in both cinematography and acting. He trained as an actor as a child, winning several awards at local and national competitions.
Academically, Robert draws on his initial training as a philosopher and theologian at Comillas University in Spain to explore how a historiographical study of film offers valuable insights on narrating the complexities of the human condition. He has an MA in the History of Film and Visual Media from Birkbeck, University of London. His dissertation, “From the Streets to the Silver Screen: How Storytelling in Early Narrative Cinema Reflected the Development of Irish-American Identities in New York City,” was awarded a distinction.
Robert’s doctoral work explores the evolution of the antihero as a character in the films of the New Hollywood. In addition to undertaking his PhD at Ghent University, Belgium, Robert has held visiting research positions at Harvard and Boston College in the United States.
Robert has published a number of academic and popular articles on the intersections of film, popular culture and diverse aspects of society. He has also been invited to give papers on this topic.
