Highlights
-
Phil was born in New Zealand where he spent his early life, this enabled him to see a mixture of cultures and landscapes. Once in the UK and with a strong interest in Art and Photography he chose to study at Reading College School of Arts and Design. He began to explore the various aspects of filmmaking, directing and filming a documentary with Duncan Bannatyne in Malawi and working as a Runner on Oliver Stone's Alexander.
After graduating with a BA in Video Production and Film Studies, Phil then focused on a Masters in Cinematography, applying to the National Film and Television School. The NFTS helped Phil focus on the importance of visual storytelling and allowed him the opportunity to work on various formats and projects which in his own words 'opened his eyes to what can be achieved technically and aesthetically'
Since then:
- Phil has gone on to Direct and shoot an Oliver Stone commercial about a video hosting company called vzaar. View the commercial here, "Wall of vzaar"
- “The Henhouse”, a short animation directed by Elena Pomares with which Phil was cinematographer, tells the story of a fox who finds shelter from the rain and the noise of the city in a small cafe. Here he encounters many characters on his goal to acquire a muffin. In the end the fox finds himself a part of the establishment, and even though he achieves his goal of getting a muffin, he finds himself unrecognisable to his own kind.?The animation has gone on to achieve over 20 nominations internationally and win 4 awards at Woods Hole, Nevada, Alaska and Yosemite international film festival.
- “Romany Me”, a short film which follows the life of a young Romany girl (Lena) as she battles the age old hatred of her race.?After wining at the YFA Festival, Romany Me is being screened on Sky TV.
- “SuperTramp” a story of a man named Ben, haunted by his past, has banished himself to a life of homelessness. His only friend is Takezo, a young man who works in a cafe. When Takezo is attacked, Ben vows to help him. Yet, something in Ben snaps and his rage bursts out with devastating consequences. ?Nominated for 3 awards.
