I think that marionettes are perfect actors and evry artist may try his vizions with puppets

In Milano, Italy, there is a long time established puppets company, "Compagnia Carlo Colla". They normally stage puppets versions of opera. One of their more recent works was "Aida", but also "Trovatore" and "Nabucco". Have a look... http://www.marionettecolla.org/

there is an amzing company in kalk bay, South Africa. they dont use marionetes as much but their puppets are amazing!!
