tefl

Has anyone tried doing a tefl course then teaching english to pay the rent !
If so i would love to hear about it.
I did many jobs before drama school but can`t bare going back to them now, even temporarily, and i find agencies unreliable .
the tefl idea seems good to me but i have not heard of anyone else doing it
(other actors , i mean).

You know, it never even dawned on me that you could do teach English as a foreign language in the UK, but of course, you more than probably can. I have a lot of friends who have done a TEFL and then gone off to sunny climes. Would also be interested in knowing more about this if anyone has any experience.....

Hi guys

I'm a TEFL teacher, but I don't know that I'd recommend it for 'between jobs' working, to be honest. TEFL teaching at a school often requires a full time commitment, usually doesn't pay that well and generally isn't that flexible - you can't really leave a class of students for a casting at short notice. There's always private tutoring which is much more flexible and better paid but isn't always that easy to come by. The theory is that you could teach corporate clients, which can earn you a bomb, but this tends to go through high profile schools (again with the commitment and flexibility) and those jobs are fairly few and far between. I don't mean to rain on your parade (!!) but I'd say this: if you want to train as a TEFL teacher, then do, cos it's fun and interesting stuff. You can also top up agency pay or bar wages or whatever with a couple of hours weekly private tutoring (which generally goes for between about £10 and £30 per hour, depending on the client - their ability to pay and level etc...) But I wouldn't do it and rely on it for your main source of resting income. As an example, I don't use my qualification much. I sometimes tutor, but my main income comes from being a cover PA through temp agencies.

I hope this helps - and again, this is only my opinion. Some people might find that it's their best asset, money-wise! I'd be interested to hear if anyone DOES use their TEFL teaching as their main source of income?
