About me
I'm Joe Ross Williams, and I suppose I could be loosely described as a writer and performer, when the opportunity arises. I was born in Truro and educated in Calne, Wiltshire. In 2005, somehow I graduated from Aberystwyth University, and upon relocating to Leicester established the performance company das theatre with my very good friend, London based dramatist Derek Butcher.Together, we co-produced and performed alongside another friend, the talented Steven Hanna in a realised ambition of reviving Anthony Neilson's 'Penetrator' at the Firebug, Leicester in October 2006, with the assistance of some brilliantly helpful and much loved people. Directed by Lucinda Cardey (Paines Plough Future Perfect 2009, Old Vic New Voices 2010), the well-received production transferred to Buxton Fringe Festival in May 2007, alongside Derek Butcher's short play 'Killer', in which I portrayed a convincing corpse (replete with 'brains' coming out from his cranium).
In 2008, my first play; 'WLTM = Bait and Switch' was the third and final das theatre production to date. The script was originally written with East Midlands Theatre Writing Partnership 'Momentum' under mentor Amanda Whittington (Be My Baby, Ladies Day), before falling in the hands of Derek and his colleague, the television actor and presenter Jason Davies (SmartLive Casino, Quiz Nation, Poirot, Back To You). Joined by Rebecca Whittles , the play previewed in Leicester at the Richard Attenborough Centre in May 2008, before a stint at Brighton's Upstairs At Three and Ten. In August, the show then moved to London's Etcetera Theatre in Camden.
Yes, it was going so well (well, reasonably well). However, in 2009, Derek and I (as das theatre) were unfortunately placed on a hiatus, due to a few personal reasons and a lot of boring, mundane everyday things.
I hit the road often with good friends Her Name is Calla, as a glorified roadie; flogging merchandise, carrying cases, buying pizzas and almost getting everyone into bother in Bognor Regis. In a shortly lived new role as a music manager, I managed to have a fingernail in their post rock success, contributing vocal takes, clicks and noises to their records The Heritage and The Quiet Lamb. I also contributed reviews under a pseudonym to music and entertainment website Artrocker, and made sporadic performances at Short Fuse in Leicester in 2009, and a viral video for Rachael Smith and her immensely popular cult cartoon Flimsy the Kitten.
2010 began with performing the lead in artist Mateus Domingos' short film 'The Doldrums', for The Film Collective, and later included a short stint presenting on radio with Her Name is Calla bassist Michael Love on Demon FM. At the end of the year and throughout 2011, I have mostly found myself in incubation, until Michael and myself came across the idea for Shyness is Nice; our first collaborative performance piece for 2012 as collective Sad Little Flyer. I have been performing solo stand up since 2013.
