About me
Born in 1980, Kate grew up and attended school in Pollokshields, just outside Glasgow. She had always been drawn towards television and the media in general, so in 1997 aged 17, she signed up to TVYP at the Edinburgh festival and enrolled on their TV Presenting workshop. Kate's warmth, enthusiasm and confident nature proved her to be a natural in front of the camera, and it became clear at this point that TV Presenting was not only something she passionately wanted to do, but also something that she has a real talent for.Kate continued with her studies at school, and at 18, left with an impressive set of Highers and enrolled at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama in 1997. She had only been a student at the Royal Academy for a short while when a contact she had made at TVYP, Ed Pugh, who at the time was head of BBC Scotland, called and offered Kate her first big break; a co-presenting role on 'The Crew Room' a live 3 hour Saturday morning program for BBC Choice, alongside Marslie Stewart.
Nine months after starting The Crew Room, whilst still continuing her studies at RSAMD, Kate was offered her first role on terrestrial television and was asked to present BBC 2's Live 3hr Saturday morning show 'Fully Booked', working alongside Chris Jarvis & Tim Vincent.
In September 1998 Kate went on to present 'Hyperlinks', BBC 2's Sunday morning science show, which looked at the science in everyday objects and linked them in an internet style way. This she co-presented with Dominic Wood and Dr Bunhead.
By now renowned for her live broadcasting skills, in November 1998 Kate was asked to anchor the live OB for BBC 1's 'Children In Need' from Inverness. Then in early 1999 she moved on to co-present BBC 1's Saturday morning flagship show, 'FBi' (the replacement show for Live & Kicking) alongside Vernon Kaye & Keith Duffy.
With BBC2's 'Hyperlinks' already under her belt, Kate was the obvious choice for CBBC when they were looking for presenters to add to their continuity line up and she presented the breakfast show and afternoon links for them. Kate made such an impression that she fronted their new science program, a 'Tomorrows World' style show aimed at kids called 'Eureka TV'. CBBC then offered Kate an exclusive two year deal, during which she went on to present CBBC's live 'Comic Relief' Show from Camden Round House. Again utilising her experience in live programming, Kate co-presented, 'It's a Girl Thing' in with Pixi Geldof. A live eight hour marathon of a magazine show, covering everything from fashion & beauty makeovers to live bands & interviews etc. , which was produced by Endemol, for Sky Mix.
Moving into move mainstream broadcasting Kate also became a regular face on 'Celebdaq', BBC 3's weekly entertainment news program, based on BBCi's celebrity stock trading website.
Building on this experience, Kate then presented the Daily Play draws for the National Lottery which was produced by Endemol and shown nightly on the BBC website.
