About me
I grew up in rural mid-Wales and went to a small village primary school within a farming community. I went on to train as an actor at the prestigious Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I have since returned to mid Wales to raise my young family. I work variously as as actor, Theatre workshop leader, director and storyteller. As well as taking some professional work outside of the county I am passionate about inspiring, engaging and empowering isolated rural people within my own community and increasing aspiration and confidence through the different aspects of my work.
As an actor I have worked in theatre in education in schools. With Theatr Powys I devised and facilitated a day long immersive theatre in Education project which toured 90% of Powys Primary schools. An imaginary member of their class had gone missing and they, his friends, had to help find him. It was a highly engaging, accessible and transformative programme which encouraged deep levels of empathy. It gave me a fantastic over view of the hugely varying communities within Powys and gave a great insight into the different challenges faced across the county.
I have also toured a one woman show which was a cross between storytelling and theatre by award winning play write Mike Kenny.
I have also done a lot of Shakespeare through a company called Shakespeare Link and worked on new writing through the wonderful Pentabus theatre company.
A lot of my work has been theatre workshop facilitation. I work regularly with Mid Powys Youth Theatre and Shakespeare Link doing this work. I have worked with participants from age 3-80 and with a broad range of abilities.
I have been assistant director on several performances by the Youth Theatre and most recently directed a major piece of community theatre; Tom a Twm.
Last year I was commissioned by Wyeside Arts Centre to work extensively with year 7 and 8 pupils of Buith Wells High school researching, over 6 months, local folk hero Twm Sion Catti and the first anglo Welsh Novelist (who wrote the popular novel about Twm) Thomas Llewellyn Prichard of Builth Wells. The research and devising process culminated in a piece of new writing which was performed, to high acclaim, at Wyeside Arts Centre before touring to other local venues- CARAD in Rhayader and The Willow Globe in Llanwrthwl.
I have just begun my exciting journey as a storyteller. I have done extensive intensive training this summer with two leading Welsh storytellers: Michael Harvey and Daniel Morden who are also providing me with mentorship through this new transition. My current focus is the telling of Radnorshire folk Tales.
Through a major project I did with National Theatre Wales and leading Dutch theatre company PeerGroup in mid Wales I discovered that Radnorshire folk stories are not documented. They are in almost every other area of Wales but not this one! I am currently undergoing a project to collect what remains through oral capturing from local people and through the mining of literature and documents available at the National Library and local archives. I am concurrently developing the material that I find for performance- the beginnings of which I am performing across local venues. The feedback so far has been overwhelming. “You make the landscape come alive, you make it sing!” said one audience member. I feel this is the beginning of a very exciting journey and a great addition to my skill base.
I have also worked for many years as an arts administrator. I have a good understanding of project development and management, financial management, fundraising, monitoring and evaluation, volunteer management, social media, marketing and publicity and much more. I am organised and excellent with people.
