About me
I am a pianist, singer, composer, writer, accompanist, arranger, orchestrator, multi-instrumentalist and musical director based in southwest London.I have a lot of amateur experience with musical theatre societies, a cappella groups and jazz bands. As the musical director and primary writer/arranger of the a cappella group “The Techtonics”, I led the group to victory at the ICCA Finals at the Beacon Theatre on Broadway in 2016, the first time a non-US group has ever won the competition.
But I am new to the professional world of musical theatre, having done a big career change from geophysics to musical directing a couple of months ago.
I was heavily involved in Imperial College’s musical theatre society, as both an actor and a musical director. I musically directed a production of School of Rock, where I orchestrated the entire show from scratch just by ear from listening to the Spotify soundtrack. The show itself was put on as a 24-hour musical, so the whole cast only found out the show the day before opening night, and so I was responsible for teaching all the vocals, pit orchestra parts as well as instrument parts for cast members (as the show has cast members playing live instruments on stage) in under 24 hours. The show was a huge success and the cast, crew, band and audience all had a great time. I MD’d several musical numbers in various Revue shows that Imperial Musical Theatre Society put on every December, including Spooky Mormon Hell Dream (Book of Mormon), Blow Gabriel Blow (Anything Goes), Moving Too Fast (Last 5 Years), Another Opening Another Show (Kiss Me Kate), You're In The Band (School of Rock) and Magic To Do / Corner of the Sky (Pippin). I also wrote the music for an original musical called From The Ashes, also performed at Imperial. It was a semi-jukebox musical, with some original songs and underscoring, and some songs from musicals such as Heathers, Spring Awakening and Matilda.
So I have a lot of MD experience, and experience of leading pit orchestras and conducting from the keyboard. As well as MDing, I have also played lead and ensemble roles in a number of Imperial theatre shows, including Adolfo Pirelli (Sweeney Todd) and Brad Majors (The Rocky Horror Picture Show).
I am a highly accomplished pianist, with a DipABRSM qualification in piano performance and over 20 years of experience. I have played jazz piano for many years and have highly advanced sight-reading and improvisational skills. I have perfect pitch, and so I am very fast at being able to pick up new music, both aurally and using sheet music. I am also a Grade 8 flautist and I have good self-taught skills on the guitar, bass and drums too. I am also a good singer (with a tenor range and a very strong high falsetto).
I am currently the Associate MD of “The Choir Of Man”, which has gained massive popularity in just a couple of years, going on to have multiple tours in America, Europe, Australia as well as headlining on a number of cruise ships. I was the Assistant MD of the Royal College of Music's production of Sweeney Todd, which was performed in the Britten Theatre in April 2019. During the winter of 2019, I will be MDing a pantomime production of “Aladdin” at the Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks. I am also working freelance as an audition/rehearsal pianist, and writing a new musical at the moment which will combine science and engineering, musical theatre and an electronic/N.Y.C./1890s sound.
