The Genesian Theatre, named for Genesius (Patron saint of actors), was founded by Cardinal Norman Gilroy, Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, in the early 50s when he handed over a disused church in the heart of the city to the Catholic Youth Organisation. Many professional actors donated their services initially and soon non-catholic actors were accepted as well, with many youthful backstage people learning the ropes. Leading Sydney directors James Lang and Evelyn Wood presided till the early 70s. Tom Lee, at that time a National Art School pupil and Murray Evans advertising artist, joined the Genesian Theatre, playing Joe Stoddard in Our Town 1957. Acting and backstage work was taught on a regular basis. Our Town starred Marlene Horsell and the late Mark Kelly. an eclectic range of plays and roles followed, as well as design of several produtions.
