About me
I am an enthusiastic wardrobe professional from Brighton, UK. I have always had a passion for textiles and costume and am very happy to have found a career working on shows. I hope to continue to develop the skills I have learnt in costume care / maintenance and backstage etiquette. My biggest dream is to work, and travel - at the same time. Because I am the happiest when I enjoy my job but would like to experience my job in many different places.I am currently working as Wardrobe and Wigs Deputy on the Uk tour of Dreamboats and Petticoats, I'll be available for my next adventure from mid October.
In my last job I contributed to the opening of a new musical, Wonderland, and the first 6 months of shows. We created backstage tracks and set up all the wardrobe logistics on and off stage.
In 2014-16 I was living in Macau, China and working for Dragone Ltd. I was a Wardrobe Attendant in a team of around 30 costume, wigs, make-up and management staff. Together we managed the wardrobe on the circus water show - The House of Dancing Water. As a team we were responsible for up to 90 performers per show, and 10 shows per week. I thoroughly enjoyed working backstage, but also had the opportunity to work as a costume and shoe technician. This gave me a better knowledge of how our costumes worked and helped me to improve my technical sewing and maintenance skills. The challenge of working on a permanent show taught me about protecting the design of the production and expanded my knowledge of prolonging the life of each costume piece.
I have also had previous experience working on a UK tour, as Wardrobe Deputy on the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. The wardrobe team of 2 took care of around 20 cast, so we dealt with the daily laundry call as well as maintaining all costume, shoes and wigs. Of course there were challenges with the logistics of a touring show, but I always enjoyed organising the show in a new theatre and packing it away ready for the next.
Being in the environment of acrobats and performers inspired me towards fitness and I began practising yoga and swimming regularly. I have become interested in health in general and find lots of encouragement in the entertainment industry! Working with people from all over the world has also inspired me to learn other languages, I try to always say "Hello" and "Thankyou" to people in their language, if their language is not mine. Mostly informally, I have been studying French to ameliorer mon vocabulaire.
Before being employed on tour I was working self – employed using the name CharlieBear Costumes. Between 2009 – 2013 I designed and made many products and completed bespoke costume jobs according to client’s briefs/ designs. I love the challenge of realising someone else's ideas but also love to create my own designs. I was making animal costume and fancy dress, which I sold at UK festivals in the summer, online and at craft/ art fairs. Alongside this I was organising and running workshops for adults using the name Crafternoon. My idea was to share basic crafty skills such as sewing, knitting and crochet at community events.
Between 2011 – 2013 I enjoyed working on pantomimes in Bournemouth, Dorset. I was fully responsible for creating the backstage tracks and I learnt how to manage a small show. I was also taking care of all fittings, alterations and maintenance so enjoyed discovering theatre costume techniques.
