Marriage is a Knotty Naughty Business

A coming of age story of Mohan and his family, Knot Not! meanders through Mohan’s life in Canada. A quiet, studious guy, Mohan is a student from India in Canada. In the foreign land, he finds a good friend in Patricia Smith, a hardworking, independent Canadian girl, also focussed on her studies. One day, Mohan’s fellow student Shanta, chides him for being a mama’s boy and he laughs it off. But Patricia demands that Shanta apologize to Mohan, but he tells Patricia, Shanta was just being funny. Patricia asks him why he lets others talk to him like that. He says it doesn’t bother him as he has thick skin. Patricia says what Shanta did to him was bullying, and unlike him, she would never let others walk all over her. The incident brings them closer and they exchange their personal stories. Mohan tells Patricia that his father pays all his bills and tells him what to do and his mother is his best friend. Patricia says she wishes she had a family like his. Mohan simply looks at her. At the end of two years, Mohan wants to settle down in Canada itself. His parents Srinivas Iyer and Padma visit him for a couple of months. Srinivas wants Mohan to marry Lakshmi, the delightful daughter of his Indo-Canadian friend Bhaskar. Although Mohan resists his father’s decision, he finds Lakshmi very amiable. All are happy about the ensuing engagement of Mohan and Lakshmi. On the surface everything looks fine. But inside, Mohan feels trapped in a web of unresolved emotions. He asks his uncle Dinesh to help him untangle the web. Dinesh is Padma’s childhood friend and to Mohan, he is like a father figure in Canada. Dinesh tells Mohan that the only person that can help him is his mother. Mohan says his mother will never do anything against his father. Padma overhears and worries about Mohan’s decision to marry Lakshmi. The date for the engagement is set. He is ready to embark on his new journey, but… Mohan is yet to figure out what he wants! Knot Not!, while dealing with a deep familial subject, touches upon many issues the society confronts today all around the globe. The story takes numerous twists and turns and explores the choices that one is able to make freely and the choices that are forced upon one. Marriage is a knotty naughty business….in Knot Not!
