The Box

2009, 13 minutes

A reserved woman loses consciousness and awakes in a steel shipping container; trapped in silence and darkness with nothing for company but her demons.

“The Box” was birthed out of a reflection on the self-imposed isolation that exists within and between individuals in Western cultures. We live in boxes blocked off from others by walls and fences. We drive our boxes to work, where we sit separated from co-workers by walls, lacking interaction and collaboration. We build up protective walls to shield us from the harshness of life, whether physical or emotional, not allowing ourselves to feel and learn from our experiences. Constantly stuck in a routine of meaningless tasks that exist simply to keep the economic machine perpetually turning. The Box itself is a microcosm of the world we live in, as well as a physical manifestation of a mental state that is strictly structured around rules and restrictions.
