Am I the only one having trouble getting into the industry?

Hello everyone! I'm very new to the industry, and although I have experience it is minimal. While I have years of experience in front of the camera my fascination is with all that goes into what you don't see. I'm told Canada's film industry is thriving but I just can't seem to find any jobs in the field I am interested in. Does anyone else feel this way?

It's an awful time for our industry. Winter is extremely slow. I've barely worked any days in January and February. Almost 3 months with no work. Dailies here and there. Wait till the summer and you'll have lots of work!

I feel the same way - I would love to have more experience with real passionate people to work with on projects. You're golden with all your in front of the camera experience, kudos!

BTW - what I mean by real people - people who see that you are trying to get your foot in the door and not "pretend" to help you with snarky side looks and giggles.

Hi Kate
I have degrees in Record Production / Recording Engineering / Sound for Film and TV and I haven't been able to find a job in my field since I graduated many years ago. I did one movie for FREE almost ($200 for 100 hours of work) and it went to a Film Festival. I got to show my mom my name up on the big screen like I promised when I was a cocky teenager.

I ended up working for 10 years setting up for concerts as local crew at Rogers Centre in Toronto. Everyone I worked with was in the same boat (there are a lot of us), but at least you could network with similar minds. Do the same in your city (it usually pays pretty well) and meet the people who might be able to help you eventually - or have the names of people to contact. A lot of live sound people work in Movies as well.

Hey guys and gals. I feel like we are all in this together. I've moved back home to Toronto after six year in Alberta studying psychology and creative writing. When I was in post-secondary I started my first production company; we made three short films together and the third one was accepted into the Edmonton Short Film Festival. Like I said I recently moved back to Toronto and I am looking for serious collaborators. I am sure that together we could compile a solid team and develop our own short films as we look for work in the industry. I'd like to get in touch with people who want to create. Let me know what you think.
