Grey's Anatomy is an American medical drama television series that has been airing on American Broadcasting Company (ABC) since March 2005. The title is an allusion to Gray's Anatomy, a classic human anatomy textbook. The series was created by Shonda Rhimes and she has also written for the show throughout its run, as well as acting as executive producer, through her production company Shondaland Productions, other producers include Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Krista Vernoff, Rob Corn, Mark Wilding, Allan Heinberg and Ellen Pompeo.
The series focuses on a group of young doctors at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, who began their careers at the facility as interns, with the show’s lead being Meredith Grey. Notable cast members include Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, T. R. Knight, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Isaiah Washington, Patrick Dempsey, Kate Walsh and more.
Grey’s Anatomy has enjoyed a 17 season run on ABC and has become a worldwide phenomenon, with a dedicated fanbase and much praise from critics since its debut. The series has garnered critical acclaim, winning two Golden Globes, 38 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and more.
