Elephant Foot

Elephant Foot creates highly disciplined, physically rigorous, research-based theatre that responds to and intervenes with society not merely by reflecting it, but by activating it. By synthesising story with liveness, the body with poetry, humour with tragedy, we aspire to affect people to be themselves affective.

As a vehicle for new performance, Elephant Foot accounts its process and productions to the following standards:

1)Responsibility. Elephant Foot is theatre that responds to location, environment, audience, society, and world. The work will be responsive to its circumstance, and thus responsible in its genesis.
2)Liveness. Elephant Foot is theatre that exists as performance because it cannot otherwise be expressed. The work will not merely take advantage of the theatrical medium, but be the medium.
3)Collaboration. Elephant Foot is theatre that is devised by the whole, never the sum of its parts. The work will be commissioned from the group, not an individual, and upon the principle of collaboration, in the belief that to be in dialogue with an audience, the creative act must embrace dialogue within itself.

Elephant Foot was originally founded by Laura Burdon-Manley in Wales as a cross-disciplinary performance troupe in 2005. Working closely with performers from such companies as No Fit State Circus, Elephant Foot devised physically robust performances which included new writing, aerial technique, clown, and contemporary dance. The company toured the UK and by 2007 had become a mainstay on the fringe circuit.

In Autumn 2009 Elephant Foot re-launched in London.
