  • About
For 50 years, East 15 has produced actors, directors, theatre practitioners and technicians for the international stage, TV, film and radio.

East 15, based in Loughton on the edge of East London and founded by Margaret Bury, grew from the work of Joan Littlewood's famed Theatre Workshop, which broke new ground, re-interpreting the classics for a modern age, commissioning new plays from socially committed writers, and creating an ensemble capable of inventing new work.

Much of the original approach was based upon the theories of Stanislavsky and over the years new training methods at East 15 have now embraced approaches from diverse practitioners.

Since 2007, under the directorship of Leon Rubin, more than ten million pounds have been spent on new buildings and facilities for East 15 in Loughton and Southend-on-Sea, including the Clifftown Studios, offering studios, workshops and a state-of-the-art theatre and performance space. Several new programmes have also been developed to take the school into a new era of international and culturally diverse theatre and physical theatre performance territories.

Now part of the University of Essex, East 15 is also a member of the leading group of UK conservatoires, CDS, and with appropriate courses accredited by NCDT, is now one of the largest specialist theatre schools in the UK, with a distinguished international teaching staff and an undergraduate and extensive postgraduate population of over 650 students.

Course: BA World Performance, 2011
The first course of its kind. It trains students not only in traditional western acting, but also in a number of different traditions such as: Beijing Opera, Kecak, Balinese Theatre, Hula, African Drumming, African Dance/Drama and others.

Course: BA World Performance, 2011
Brilliant, firm basis in Western acting with a strong layer of other World theatre, worked through with masters in their own arts. Added extras of training in improvisation and comedy stand up which were greatly enjoyed. Options to pursue any particular area that interests you with opportunities in directing, devising, scriptwriting as well. Does a heck of a lot more performances than is usual for a standard drama course which is key experiance.

The Community Theatre course is not only for plain characters! It is for artists who not only want to create their own craft but for those who want to do drama that matters. This includes Interventional Theatre with disadvantaged social groups or/and with a political/social intent (such as in a conflict area)TIE, Street Theatre, Forum, etc... Apart from all of this you also learn how to produce and manage any arts related event and how to become an independent artist capable of finding a job.If you want to know more just feel free to drop me an email here on CCP. Course: 3 yr Acting and Contemporary Theatre, 2009
I truly believe that East 15 Acting School was the best place I could have gone to. It changed my life - and that is no exaggeration. I was on the Acting and Contemporary Theatre course and although it was highly challenging and sometimes left me feeling, ' what am I doing here, ' I wouldn't have had it any other way. We had such variety in our training - physical theatre, devising, physical comedy&clowning, site-specific theatre, film and mixed media, writing workshops with April De Angelis, acrobatics....the list goes on. So I left feeling like a well rounded performer, and a fearless one, able to do whatever was asked of me in an audition, and more than capable of creating my own work and not having to rely on anyone else to get it for me.

Course: Post Graduate Acting, 2009
This was an excellent course for me. It was demanding and challenging and supported my shift into a professional acting career. The skills I learned and the emphasis on creating theatre really helps to prepare actors for a career into today's demanding environment. This is a course that you will get more out of if you are prepared to put your whole self in. It is practical rather than accademic, and has little time or space to coast or relax...but that is what you want right?

I can't recommend this course more highly to anyone with a passion for modern theatre and contemporary writing. This is where the future of modern theatre is. This gives you the opportunity to be a part of it! You have to work hard, but it's fun so you don't mind. Creating your own theatre... what can be more special?

Course: Post Graduate Acting, 2007
The one-year Post Graduate course at East 15 was, for me, the most effective method of entering the profession. Well structured and challenging, it allowed me to acquire an overall background knowledge of theatre in general and useful, day to day disciplines and techniques which have stood me in good stead in my career to date. Neither the cheapest nor the most expensive in terms of course fees, I feel that the Post Graduate Acting course at East 15 was good value for money with a strong "no nonsense" content presented by seasoned tutors who really knew their stuff. I would strongly recommend this course to anyone who wants to actually get their hands dirty and work as an actor rather than seeking an ethereal and academic experience of theatre.

I loved this course. I learnt so much about myself and performing. I now feel so much more confident in my own abilities. Also the campus is fantastic, I love the grounds and the theatre and the staff were all really friendly and supportive. The hardest year of work I have ever had and I loved every second, would do it again in a heart beat.

Course: Post Graduate Acting, 2002
The course at East 15 was excellent at the time I took it. I can not speak for it now, but in 2002 it gave me an excellent grounding from which to develop my career as an actor. I still use many of the skills I learnt at East 15. In fact there are many things I was taught that I didn't understand at the time but have become clear as my career has developed.

My time at East was a great time of learning and discovery, not just as an actor but as a person. Intense? Yes but in a supportive enviroment that allows for failures as well as flourishes that is an excellent way to prepare for the tough life and career that an actor has ahead of them. It is a long time now since I graduated, 12 years in fact but the ethos of East 15 is more than just a fad or a passing phase.
