  • About
The Guildhall School of Music & Drama offers musicians, actors, stage managers and theatre technicians a dynamic environment in which to develop as artists and professionals.

The School first opened its doors on 27 September 1880 to 62 part-time students in a disused warehouse in the City of London. Today it is situated in the heart of one of Britain's most important arts venues at the Barbican and has over 800 full-time music and drama students, with a growing international reputation for its teaching and research.

Course: 2 yr. Acting, 1971
My course was the last of the acting course to be just two years, it went to three after us. I look back at it as a good learning experience, although I already had an Equity card before going there. All I have to show for it is an ACTING certificate, it would have been better to have had some sort of professional qualification but it was a totally practicable course, no written work at all as far as I can remember, which is what I wanted at the time to be fair. I have since worked with the director Ian Judge who was in my year. The main problem was too many women on the course so final shows were double cast.I was lucky enough to get a government grant and I remember I had to audition for the local council as well as The Guildhall. It certainly gave me a good framework and I'm still in the business!

Course: BA hons Stage Management & Technical Theatre, 2006
This course was an excellent use of my time and funds. It gave me all the training to be a success in the industry. The contacts that I made whilst working with visiting creative s and staff in the school helped me find work once I graduated. I would highly encourage anyone to apply for a place on this course if they wanted an all round training in stage management and technical theatre.

Course: Part-Time Studies in Pianoforte, 1989
I studied with Dr Frank May, an inspirational teacher. I have played piano professionally at Kettner's restaurant, 2002-2008, for theatre shows, my own one man show in classical music, 'Ludwig's Van' and on recordings of my music for television, film and production library music.
