• About
The University of Central Lancashire is going global – and is evolving every minute of every day. We are now one of the largest universities in the UK with more than 32,000 students, 500 undergraduate courses and 180 postgraduate courses – and it’s not stopping there.

Around 70% of UCLan’s students come from the North West and the University is proving to be a vital heartbeat to the region’s booming regeneration. It employs 3,000 people, has a turnover of £120m a year and contributes £300m to the regional economy.

The University is in the heart of the UK’s newest city, Preston, and is a key element in the shaping of this exciting city’s bright future.

It has invested £60m on new campus developments – including the £15.3m ‘media factory’ to aid work in art, design and performing arts plus help graduates get a helping hand in business.

People thrive here – and we are proud that 95% of our students are in employment or further study within six months of graduating. That’s higher than virtually every other North West university and equal 32nd across the UK.

UCLan continually produces students equipped to thrive in a modern, ever-changing world. You, too, could be one of them.

The School of Art, Design and Performance offers aspiring creatives an exciting choice of courses designed to provide students with a competitive edge. Our innovative and enterprising environment produces students whose hard work, enthusiasm and talent generate successful graduates and industry award winners year after year.

Study takes place within cutting edge facilities, including our £15 million state-of-the-art Media Factory; the new building helps nurture student, graduate and entrepreneurial talent and has strengthened the North West’s reputation as a major centre for job creation within the creative industries. Students are encouraged to undertake work experience and exploit our strong links with leading companies and industry figures to help them pursue their chosen career. Our staff, many of whom have experience in industry, are dedicated and skilled in teaching and learning skills, knowledge transfer with the business sector, and research – much of which is rated internationally excellent (RAE 2008). They relish the opportunity to share their passion and knowledge with new students every year and look forward to meeting you at one of our Open Days where you can discover more about our courses, uni life and visit our facilities.

The BA Hons Acting course at the University of Central Lancashire, from my experience, was an invaluable tool for the development of my Acting career. It taught me many of the skills and disciplines that I have since called upon on numerous occasions. I gained some invaluable contacts in the industry, learned the jargon that goes with this field and not to mention made some life long friends. The classes are varied and include a wide range of disciplines including Dance, Physical Theatre, Improvisation, Voice, theory and Script work. The tutors are second to none, they are fun, friendly, knowledgeable and always up for a laugh. (Thanks Helen, Ruth, Amy, Dave, Terence, Matt and all the other fabulous guys) I would stress however, that because this is a University Degree course, (NOT an acting school) there is a lot of theory work to be done, including several essay type journals per year and a 6-8 thousand word dissertation in the final year. For students who are looking for a solely practical course with little or no written work, I would look elsewhere. However a Degree is still a Degree (doesn't matter what in) it proves to an employer that you can commit, work hard and have the mental capacity necessary to achieve a high qualification. What attracted me to this particular University was the fantastic facilities that are available, including mirrored and sprung dance studios, the wonderful St Peter's building (a converted church right in the centre of campus used solely for the arts), the new and very well stocked library and the awesome new Media Factory...words can not describe it, it is high tech, very well equipped with more rooms than students (which makes booking round performance time a dream come true) and it even has its very own green screen!! On the whole I really enjoyed my 3 years there, it helped of course that Preston is a fabulous City for night life, shopping and culture, with some of the best and cheapest bars and clubs in the North, (including student only nights at £1 entry and £1 per drink.) I would recommend this University to any aspiring Actor.
