About me
Andrés Arias is a New York based filmmaker. He currently finished his thesis s for the MFA Social Documentary at the School of Visual Arts. The French film director François Truffaut once said that the “filmmaking of the future is an act of love.” This idea inspired Andrés to pursue a career of telling stories though films.
Andrés discovered his passion for filmmaking while studying art at University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus and while designing a stage set for Federíco García Lorca’s play “Buster Keaton’s Stroll”. Later, Andrés attended the recently opened program in film studies at the University and chose film as his medium. He graduated with two bachelors degrees and a minor in film studies.
As a graphic designer and journalist, Andrés contributed to several cultural projects related to art and film. The goal of these projects was to attract the public to presentations of young nouveau filmmakers as well as to create an environment for independent film productions. Thorough out the city of Mayagüez, Andrés was instrumental in advancing cultural richness through cinema. As recently as this year, Andrés worked with the Puerto Rico Film Society to bring the Sundance Institute’s Film Forward to the local arena for the first time in Puerto Rican history.
In 2009, Andrés went to Haiti to film and document an important medical mission there. On this assignment, Andrés held the many roles of interviewer, writer and creative director. This challenging experience further deepened his commitment to filmmaking. The next year, Andrés worked with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Puerto Rico to document Puerto Rican muralist Sofia Maldonado as she created a work of art. Documenting the creativity of a mural artist required a different approach than with other artists. This film delved into the various stages involved in creating a large piece of art and showed the final outcome of her work.
Born in Quito Ecuador, of spaniard descent, and raised in Puerto Rico, Andrés feels a strong connection with the Latin community in NY and abroad. He expects that his stories will reach people’s hearts. Andrés aspires to make documentaries with meaning and significance, exploring every aspect related to this type of filmmaking– including how it affects audiences.
