About me
Knowledge:* I have an Honours Degree in Film and Television Production
* I, with others, was appointed as an 'Ambassador' for the BA Hons Film and Television Production Degree and this involved introducing 1st year undergraduates to the requirements of the course and the nature of the type of equipment they would be using. This included for example how the Media Loans facility operated and the type of equipment involved such as the JVC HM700, the range of microphones and Final Cut pro editing suites. I have also acted as a volunteer on A-Level Media Studies at Arnewood School helping students to produce and direct short films, give technical advice on the Samsung VP MX20 and imovie 09 and help students with any other course-related issues.
* I have worked with the Soft Box lighting for photography, Flood lights with filters and gels for filming on location, and other various lights within the studio which is operated by a lighting control console, Sony HVR-Z1E as well as the JVC HM700, a broad range of microphone types including boom microphones, radio microphones for studio purposes and directional microphones.
* My broad media industry knowledge has been acquired via the modules undertaken as part of the BA programme. These include: Role of Producer, Television Practices, and Introduction to Film and Cinema and principally via the Major Project. It was during this latter input that our crew were exposed to the use and application of IPTV techniques including live television and video on demand.
* I have not undertaken a post-graduate course but would probably wish to do so in the future. Similarly, any consultancy I have been involved in has been within the parameters of my undergraduate course. However, I have had to undertake substantial research for the project titled: How was Hollywood used as a weapon during the Cold War? And for the final Major Project element of the degree. This involved both primary and secondary data acquisition.
Skills:
* My communication skills have been developed through the delivery of course work at presentations and through my role as producer on three television shows undertaken by myself and student colleagues.
* My undergraduate course relied very heavily on team work and adhering to deadlines. As such this required a keen sense of personal organization particularly in my capacity as a producer. As a result, I consider myself to have a good sense of time keeping and administration.
* Throughout my post-16 education I have been involved in assessments that have relied very heavily on group work and team activities. This is particularly true for my undergraduate training as TV production by its very nature involves a team based approach to learning.
* Part of the final Major Project involved an input on research methodology. This involved the techniques of gathering and analyzing both primary and secondary data and presenting it in a useful and meaningful manner.
* As part of my course, I have made use of Microsoft office which includes; Microsoft word, excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft OneNote. I have also had to use other programmes for creative skills which included; Photoshop, Illustrator, Imovie, Final Cut Pro, Motion, Compressor and Garage band.
Attributes
* My background to date has been almost exclusively within an academic environment. Although it is an environment in which I feel very much at home I think that my long term career prospects would benefit from some 'hands on' experience. In the future I do feel however, that I will remain within an academic environment and this maybe in either a technical or academic position. It would be difficult at this point to make any hard and fast commitment as an industry position may well arise that I would feel compelled to consider.
* As a teaching assistant at Arnewood School I was obliged to liaise with a number of academic staff members including the Head of Expressive Arts and other teaching staff associated with the A-Level Course. At University there was full co-operation between both academic staff, technical staff and students in order to fulfil the course objectives.
* Most of my professional links outside the immediate university environment involved listening to speakers who were specialists in their own fields. These included a BBC producer who talked about his activities including interviewing the cast at the premiere of Lord of The Rings and directors at The Cambridge Union Society such as Oliver Stone and Stephen Frears. My awareness of changes and innovations in the film industry is supported by my student membership of the BFI.
* I consider myself an approachable person and feel I get on well with the majority of people I come into contact with. However, I do enjoy my own company on occasions and have no trouble filling my own time.
* All undergraduate had to complete a Negotiated Learning Agreement with their course tutor. This entailed identifying both short and long term career plans to aid our personal development.
* I am fortunate to come from a family where every member has attended a university. As a result changes in the higher education market and the needs of educational establishments generally are regularly discussed within the household. Although this has sometimes led to a number of heated debates they are undertaken within a friendly atmosphere.
