About me
I'm an award-winning director, writer, editor, cinematographer, animator, and music composer based in Des Moines, Iowa. Over the last six years, I've directed, shot, edited, and color graded just about every type of video project. This includes 50 short films in drama, documentary, and comedy genres, commercials, corporate videos, news footage, weddings, music videos, and animation. Nearly all of these can be seen at my web site: https://shriekingtree.comMy short films have screened at festivals across the US and internationally, and many of them have won awards. I've won five awards for Best Editing at separate competitions in Iowa and Los Angeles, for four separate film projects. I've also won awards for Best Writing, Best Acting, and Best Directing at two separate festivals in the midwest. A full list of the awards I've won and festivals my films have screened at can be found here: https://shriekingtree.com/awards
I'm highly skilled with a wide range of hardware and software. For cameras, I've worked extensively with the Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K, the Sony a7s ii, and the Canon 5D Mark III. I've also run sound on many projects, making use of a Zoom H6n and a Schoeps boom microphone, several different types of lavalier microphones, and on-camera Rode microphones.
I've edited full projects in all three of the major editing programs, including Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro X, and DaVinci Resolve. I've worked as a graphic designer and animator for over 15 years, so I also know Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Animate well. I've edited and mixed audio for all 50 of my short films, making frequent use of Apple Logic Pro X to tweak and edit sounds. I have also written the original music for more than half of those films, using the same program to create musical scores with the help of live performers for whom I write sheet music.
As a freelancer for over a decade, I'm extremely self-motivated. I have organized and produced nearly all of the 50 short film projects I've created. This includes the pre-production duties of writing and editing scripts, working with clients to revise those scripts, creating cast and prop lists, contacting and scheduling cast and crew members, scouting locations, writing a list of shots, creating a schedule to ensure project shoots are completed on time, coordinating with camera and lighting crew, and dividing a client's given budget to cover all of the aforementioned items.
On the day of a shoot, I often direct and shoot simultaneously, moving through the organized list of shots I created earlier and keeping track of the time windows I scheduled for each scene to make sure everything is on track. I work with each of the actors, talking them through the dialogue and emotions of each scene, and helping them adjust their performance to fit the project.
When the shoot concludes, I make sure all of the actors and crew are paid, I back up the footage, and promptly begin editing. As I've spent nearly 10 years competing in timed filmmaking competitions, I habitually turn my editing work in quickly, often delivering clients a polished edit within two days of shooting. I'm also accustomed to the process of working with clients to make changes to each project to ensure they're fully satisfied with what they get.
I enjoy both working independently and collaborating with others on film projects of all types, and using my wide array of skills to create the most polished product I can.

Additional information:
Despite my long history of filmmaking, I am relatively new to this web site, so I don't have a lot of verified projects on here just yet.
