About me
Drama Teacher and Artistic Director for Scene Productions Physical Theatre Company. Established in 2004 we have been touring devised shows and set text productions to Schools, Theatres and Art Centres for 11 years. We also specialise in designing and running workshops for GCSE and A-Level drama students.
I have just finished directing an outdoor, community production of 'Alice in Wonderland' at South Hill Park. This took place as a promenade within the woodland areas at the venue. This commission was granted after our £25,000 commission to direct a 2014 community production of 'Oh What A Lovely War' which played to sold out crowds as part of South Hill Parks centenary programme.
We are an Associate Company of Redbridge Drama Centre and South Hill Park and will be collaborating with Redbridge to create a promenade production of 'Metamorphosis' in October 2015
Recently featured in teaching Drama Magazine as an actor/practitioner/director whose style is studied in schools

Reviews:
Just saw Alice in Wonderland. Wow, wow, wow!
Amazing imagination - and all the performances were pitch perfect.
Audience split and reunification was effective and logistically clever.
The “underground” tunnel was a fabulous piece of design – a living installation. The caterpillar concept - and his home environment – delightful. One of the best promenade performances I have seen.
Many, many congratulations to all involved.
(Ron McAllister, Chief Executive, South Hill Park 2015)
An immersive experience, the audience are invited to participate in the production from beginning to end, and by the end I was close to tears. And that is the power of this production. Local actors (cast from regional theatre groups) bring to life the stories of real people from Bracknell and Reading who fought and died in the First World War.
(Female Arts on 'Oh What A Lovely War' in 2014)
Katharine and co-director Kelly Taylor-Smith have struck a fine balance between entertaining their audience and honouring those who lost their lives in the war.
(Get Reading on 'Oh What A Lovely War' in 2014)
Scene Productions have another hit on their hands with their production of Georg Buchner’s bleak realisation of Woyzeck....It’s a real delight to see this travelling company doing so well. Committed, hard-working, generous in their determination to share the beauty of their craft, this production deserves your booking!
(Ink Pellett Magazine - On 'Woyzeck' 2014)
Scene Productions, as usual, presents a highly refined form of jerky, balletic, fast, evocative physical theatre with a strong debt to Brecht and some slickly puppeted underpinning. Nicely timed for the 2014 centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, this Woyzeck is a fine piece of rapid fire theatre which shocks as much as it entertains.
(The Stage Newspaper on 'Woyzeck' 2014)
'Katharine Hurst is a one woman whirlwind, using voice, mime, movement and humour to tell this most bleak of tales...I watched in awe.'
(Ink Pellet on Metamorphosis 2011 - 2012, Directed by Katharine Hurst)
'A brittle, rhythmic, grotesquely and comically exaggerated Mrs Samsa...Outstanding' (The Stage on Metamorphosis removed )
'The three-strong cast miraculously conjured up two separate crews and gave a masterclass in presenting a lot of action in a little space... impressive storytellers and a rare kind of magic.'
(The Stage on Vampirates, 2011)
But leading the performance was Katharine Hurst, one of the company directors, whose energy and enthralling range of unique characters, including a sadistic lunatic doctor and a General Blimp-like officer, gave a glowing performance. The enigmatic acting, innovative ideas, including the particularly effective use of a mini Woyzeck puppet and the witty script, made the show nothing short of inspired.
(Isle of Wight Press on Woyzeck 2010)
'Provocative, intriguing and sensitively done.'
(Three Weeks on The Other Side, Edinburgh 2009)
'Hurst's performance will move you to the edge of your seat, to feelings of guilt and to tears.'
(Allthefestivals.com on The Other Side, Edinburgh 2009)
'Katharine Hurst is a fine actor who chillingly combines hilarity with horror.' (The Stage on Fear and Misery of the Third Reich 2008)
