About me
I am a keen learner and hard worker, and I enjoy working in theatre productions. After working as a dresser, I understand the importance of the organisational skills needed for working in the Wardrobe Department in Theatre, as well as how to handle quick changes at the side of stage. My past experiences in theatre have enabled me to react quickly when faced with sudden show or cast changes. I enjoy working as part of a team and independently, working and interacting with new people.I have recently worked as a dresser for the children on the World Premiere of Finding Neverland at Curve Theatre Leicester, for principal actors on White Christmas at the Lowry Theatre Salford, and on a pantomime as part of my work experience. I have also been heavily involved throughout technical weeks in the Wardrobe Department on a variety of productions, assisting in any maintenance or alterations required, as well as the laundering of costumes. I have learned a great deal from these experiences and interacting with others to gain a better understanding of theatre work. During my degree, I also constructed and designed a costume for a Pantomime Dame and I feel that this experience helped me understand the quality of sewing required for theatrical costumes. These experiences enabled me to develop my organisational and social skills and I learned how to handle and care for delicate, vibrant costumes.
I also have a BA (Hons) Degree in Costume Construction. During my studies, I developed my sewing skills and gained the ability to construct a garment including: paper pattern cutting, constructing toiles, fittings, alterations and constructing a completed garment and I enjoy working in a team. During my degree, I have constructed many garments including an Eighteenth Century bodice. I have also reconstructed an Nineteenth Century evening dress completely by hand which enabled me to further my hand sewing and construction skills. As well as contemporary and period garments, I have also constructed period undergarments, including a boned corset. I thoroughly enjoyed constructing this corset and I understand the importance of the construction and fit of a corset.
Throughout my degree, I have used many challenging fabrics including duchess satin, silk satin and silk velvet. I have most recently constructed two costumes, interpreting the original Broadway designs for Tracy and Edna in Hairspray, one of which was a dress constructed with sequined fabric which was quite challenging as I was required to first remove the sequins along the seam allowance, and then later hand-sew them back onto the finished garment. I was also required to construct a sequined dress suitable for a man to wear, ensuring that he looked feminine.
Additional skills:
Use of a sewing machine and over-locker - Domestic and industrial; Several hand sewing techniques (slip stitch, herringbone stitch, stab stitch etc) as well as hand embroidery;
Paper pattern cutting as well as cutting on the stand;
Fabric manipulation;
Life drawing using a range of materials;
