About me
Maintaining a professional working practice consistent to responding to new changes in social environment is imperative to my ethos as an artist and worker. I pride myself on working in numerous disciplines such as film, theatre and poetry. I am particularly interested in notions of ‘accessibility’. How do arts organizations, centres and hubs ensure their-onsite venues, programmes, outreach and learning opportunities are as widespread as possible and readily prioritized.I work with a strong interest in creative visual expression. I strive to not only create meaningful work but push my comfort zone in the mediums and visual styles I use. My love for storytelling brought me to filmmaking and my love of creativity has lead me through many non traditional projects over the beginning of my career. Cross-arts and collaboration is at the key. For example, when receiving the Roundhouse Film fund and a grant of £1,000, I saw it as an opportunity to commission four young poets to respond to the title ‘’The Garden Lamps Are Tiny Moons’’, to be interpreted with a series of visual and musical accompanists. I wrote about this working process, and this can be read here: http://www.roundhouse.org.uk/blog/2016/11/all-i-needed-was-poetry-a-super-8-and-my-back-garden/
Equally, hailing from a background of community theatre; I have been an active participant in numerous community-settings. This had since lead me stumbling into various different disciplines and diverse artistic environments that have enriched a deep philosophy. In my work as a facilitator, I aim to encourage playfulness, use of different forms, language and games as means of expression; leading participants into places of self confidence. Viewing community work as a way of mobilising groups and enabling a sense of power in the collective and self; I enjoy being a part of an ensemble and working collaboratively. I have worked with Barbican, Stratford Circus, St Mungos and various other organisations in workshop settings.
In my own personal view, I believe firmly in the transformative power the arts can have in our human lives. It is not only integral to our cultural needs to question the fabric of how our society changes, but italso provides laughter, enjoyment, capacities for love and healing. There is a guttural sense of anger in me over how government bodies fail to recognize this; that our system at its core is hungry to push art out of education, in favour of standardized testing and exam-based models. In one of my sessions at the Guildhall, Jacob Sam-LaRose, [artist, poet and teacher of the Barbican Young Poets], proclaimed to the class quite proudly after a discussion around habits and why humans form them, that we are pattern-making creatures. We so easily return to the same thought processes that our muscle memory instinctively craves. As humans, we fall, flop and stumble into the narratives we comfortably know. When young people are given opportunities to make art for themselves, their habits are formed comfortably in modes of expression. This can provide scope for an enriching of skill, mental well being and vibrancy.
Time and time again I have seen how engaging in the arts in various contexts can add a special dimension to our lives – perhaps by helping us to find our creative voice, by opening new doors, extending our personal boundaries and providing opportunities for us to understand who we are. There is no doubt that the arts can be a source of inspiration, a celebration of the human spirit and can enhance the quality and meaning of our lives.
