About me
For years, I have enjoyed designing and making clothes. I also love TV and film - both watching them and creating them. To combine my love of making clothes and telling stories, I decided to go into costume. I currently volunteer at the Royal Exchange Costume Hire, where I make and maintain costumes, as well as assisting clients to find the right costume for their project. This has ranged from putting together an authentic Victorian costume for a Dickensian Christmas event; finding an early twentieth century costume for a museum's re-enactment; to putting together several late eighteenth century military costumes for a play about the European colonisation of Australia. I have also been a costume assistant for Kingsley Players' pantomime version of 'Cinderella', put on in early December 2017. I made costumes and helped decide different characters' costumes, working with other members of the costume department to ensure everything was done on time. I am currently completing an Arts Award Level 2. In order to expand my knowledge and experience of costume making, my main project is to make a Medieval peasant dress, designed for the character Daine from Tamora Pierce's book 'Wild Magic'.Referees:

Additional information:
As well as being an enthusiastic and skilled costume designer and maker, I am organised and good to work with. I recently graduated from university, and throughout my academic career I have been able to maintain high grades whilst taking part in extra-curricular activities, like drama productions, co-writing a script for KingsTV (my student TV station), and paid work. Currently, in addition to volunteering at the Royal Exchange Costume Hire, I work as a Customer Team Member at The Co-op; I completing my Arts Award Level 2; and I am participating in Storyhouse's Young Film Programmers, where I am in a group of young people organising a mini weekend-long film festival in early February. To ensure all these projects are completed on time and to a high standard, I have to organise my time well, learning how to prioritise and share out tasks effectively.
Most of the projects I have been involved with also involve working in teams of various sizes. For instance, in co-writing a script for KingsTV I only really directly worked with the director and my fellow co-writer. On the other hand, in the recent production of 'Cinderella' that I worked on, there was a large cast and crew. There are around 10 other participants in the Young Film Programmers. Through operating in groups of varying sizes, I have learned how to work in a team. I can make my voice heard, expressing my ideas and taking the lead when it is called for. For example, with the Young Film Programmers I am currently taking the lead in areas such as budgeting, catering, and putting on events surrounding the films that we show, because I have found my strengths lie in those organisational areas. On the other hand, there are other people in the group with more experience in marketing, so while I am happy to assist in any way I can, they are taking the lead in that area. This ability to delegate according to skills and interests will be really important in making sure our mini film festival is successful.
Theatre professional:
For several years now, I have enjoyed designing and making clothes. I also enjoy theatre, film and TV - both watching them, and being involved in making them. I have decided to combine my love of making clothes and my love of telling stories through theatre, film and TV by going into costume. I currently volunteer at the Royal Exchange Costume Hire, maintaining the costumes and creating new ones, as well as working with clients to find the right costume for their project or event. Through this, I am learning how clothes from various periods have been constructed and what styles were fashionable in different periods. I have also worked in the costume department in 'Cinderella', performed over Christmas 2017 by my local amateur dramatics society. I worked with other members of the costume department to both make the costumes and to decide what each character should wear. I am also currently completing an Arts Award Level 2, and my main project is to create a Medieval peasant dress, created for the character Daine from Tamora Pierce's 'Wild Magic'. I wanted to expand my knowledge of designing and creating clothes, so I decided to make a costume for a character from this book series which I love.
Additional skills:
As well as being able to make clothes, I am organised and good to work with. I recently graduated from university, and throughout my academic career I managed to achieve good grades in school whilst being involved in various extra-curricular activities, such as drama productions, KingsTV (my university's student TV station) and paid work. Currently, as well as being involved with the Royal Exchange Costume Hire and an amateur dramatics society, I work part-time as a Customer Team Member at The Co-op; am participating in Storyhouse's Young Film Programmers; and I am studying for an Art and Design iGCSE and an Arts Award Level 2. In order to ensure all these different projects are completed on time and to a high standard, I have to organise my time well.
I have worked in teams of various sizes, from the large numbers which were involved in my school productions to small teams of with just a handful of people. For instance, when I co-wrote a script for KingsTV, I only really worked with my co-writer and the director. Through these experiences, I have learned how to make my voice heard in groups both large and small, and how to keep everyone organised so that a project is done to a high standard and on time. However, I am not dependent on other people to complete my work. At the Royal Exchange, every volunteer has their own projects, and while we might ask for advice or discuss the best way to do something it is ultimately that volunteer who executes the project. For my Art and Design iGCSE, I complete each project completely independently before showing it to my tutor for grading, showing I can work in a variety of environments depending on the situation.
