REVIEWS OF PAST WORK
THE SHAPE OF THINGS by Neil LaBute at the Arcola Theatre with Arcade Productions
“Director Samuel Miller also actively exposes and grapples with the tribulations of expression within the friendships of young adults. Miller highlights how relationships can evolve with the friends we do not choose: the ones who sit next to us in a lecture, or the room-mates we are forced to live with. More specifically, Miller identifies how these friendships grow and suffer under the pressures of external forces…. Miller elegantly touches on all the issues raised by The Shape of Things, without awkwardly spelling them out. In particular, his assertion that “the play could be read as an allegory for the fall of man” is masterfully alluded to throughout the play….When the play comes to its cataclysmic ending, the lights turn to the audience, inviting us to feel like we are also an audience within the narrative. This seems to hand over a responsibility to discuss the issues raised in the play, and it is these understated touches that mark this production as one worth a watch.”
A YOUNGER THEATRE (Martha Quigley)
“It’s definitely well worth travelling out to the funky Arcola theatre to catch this modern classic with killer performances from a particularly strong cast.”
THE GAY UK (Chris Bridges) *****
“His direction of it is intelligent and well judged. Allied to an excellent cast and some innovative set design.”
ONE STOP ARTS (Jimmy Kelly) ****
TRUE BLUE by Dominic Cavendish, part of Thatcherwrite at Theatre503
“I find myself transfixed by Georgia Strawson’s highly credible Thatcher impression, complete with husky tones and formidable barnet”
A YOUNGER THEATRE (Daniel Harrison)
“The conceit of Dominic Cavendish’s ‘True Blue’ is almost Napoleonic… It is a powerful playlet beautifully performed by Georgina Strawson with strong support from Freddie Capper.” THE PUBLIC REVIEWS (Harry Stern)
OLGA'S ROOM at The Arcola Theatre
"Performed with utter conviction by its cast of four" - THE GUARDIAN (Lyn Gardner)
"A production of punishing intensity by Samuel Miller… It's a play that will linger in the mind" - THE INDEPENDENT (Paul Taylor)
4.48 PSYCHOSIS by Sarah Kane at the Drayton Theatre
"Never have I wanted to write the words "I found it difficult to applaud this play" and meant it as a good (if depressing) point. If you applaud a performance 4.48 Psychosis too heartily, it can't have been as disturbing and as notoriously desolate as she wrote it to be. And this production is rightly disturbing and austere."
ONE STOP ARTS (Heather Deacon) ****
THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM by Jacob Hodgkinson, part of POE: MACABRE RESURRECTIONS
"A strong, communal effort... ensemble of keen-eyed directors, the energetic cast and writers who know how to graft a modern mask onto the short story master… a marker of an adroit ensemble that promises more gripping, and hopefully grisly, treats for the future." THE STAGE (Jonathan Watson)
"It would be invidious to commend the acting without mentioning Priyank Morjaria's tour de force in The Pit and the Pendulum, peopling his chamber of horrors both with his tormentors and his remembered family : a touching, shocking and riveting performance, the obscenities uttered in his pain and panic echoing legitimately around the ancient, hallowed walls." - REMOTEGOAT ****
BEDTIME SOLOS by Jakob Holder at the Old Red Lion Theatre and Octagon Theatre, Bolton
"Caps (and not the internal kind) should be well and truly doffed to Scott Christie and Heather Wilds who play the two leads with tough yet vulnerable energy" THE LONDON WORD
"The spoken word glides through the ambience of the auditorium creating passion and substance, inducing thought-provoking dramatisation worthy of commendation as a classic piece of literature this has to be the most intense piece of theatre I have seen this year" REMOTE GOAT ****
"Intricate shadow play, unfalteringly absorbing performances from Heather Wilds and Scott Christie, and a uniquely poetic script" SCIENCE IS A LIE
"It is a very unique play which I suspect will divide opinion - whatever you think, its power is unquestionable" EXTRA EXTRA
"In this two hander Scott Christie and Heather Wilds offer strong performances as the characters whose names we never know and whose eye colour we never find out. They relish the vivid language and their monologues and duologues are well paced as befitting an evening of passion" BRITISH THEATRE GUIDE
F***ING MEN by Joe DiPietro at the Kings Head Theatre and Arts Theatre
"Phil Willmott and Sam Miller's production is seductive yet brisk, blending scenes into one another with atmospheric lighting and music." - THE TIMES (Dominic Maxwell) ****
ASHES by Ali Muriel at the Pleasance Dome
"Hot, passionate and a hell of a performance it was in the depiction of the tortured foursome's humanity that this piece really shone." - THREE WEEKS **** (Seth Ewins)
MACBETH at the Pleasance
"Samuel Miller's production shines its light on Macbeth's remorseless mental disintegration, a treatment that the claustrophobic confines of the Pleasance Studio reward well." - TIME OUT (Lucy Powell)
PARASITES by Ali Muriel at the Edinburgh Fringe
"The very model of a fringe play." - THE STAGE (Gerald Berkowitz)
"Parasites" is a beautifully written and fresh script with an excellent cast .. a genuinely fun experience with brilliant ideas and a rather black humour." - SCENE4 MAGAZINE
SO THIS IS IT? by Leila Borris at the Tabard Theatre
"Samuel Miller's direction is bold enough to focus on the emotional truth of the writing and moves seamlessly through the time-shifts and changes of pace, which is no mean feat.. one of the strongest, most original and freshest pieces of new writing I have seen this year." - BRITISH THEATRE GUIDE (Louise Hill)
GOBSMACK! by Ali Muriel at the White Bear Theatre
"Gobsmack! passes all too quickly, its uproarious and spot-on comedy derived from scatterball situations directed pacily by Samuel Miller Gobsmack! is well named, leaving the audience astonished and sent away grinning simultaneously." - MUSICOMH.COM (Michael Hubbard)
BLITHE SPIRIT in Harpenden
"The uniformly excellent six-strong cast under the punchy direction of Samuel Miller capture both the frivolity and the looming troubles in the text" - ST ALBANS OBSERVER (Mark Edwards)
