Since graduating with Distinction in MA Post Production Editing at Bournemouth University, the film I edited as my Master's project has been broadcast on UK television and will be released on DVD in early 2013. 'Fearless Vampire Killers: At War with the Thirst' is a documentary focused on the up-and-coming British rock band, made in collaboration with fellow BU student, Lee Keable. The film was broadcast on LoadedTV in February 2013. This collaboration with director Lee Keable and Fearless Vampire Killers extended in the production for a music video for the band's single, 'Exploding Heart Disorder', which has been viewed over 30,000 times on Youtube and is regularly broadcast on music channels such as Kerrang! and Scuzz. For both of these projects I undertook the roles of editor, camera operator, co-producer and assistant director.
At Bournemouth University I became comfortable operating Avid Media Composer and refined my skills on Final Cut Pro 7, which I had previously been self-taught. I also have experience in using DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Compressor, Photoshop and the new Final Cut Pro X. During my undergraduate I became competent on logging and capturing footage shot on miniDV tape, and recently at Bournemouth I have worked with footage filmed with the RED camera and been introduced the kind of post production work flow associated with such large files.
This past summer while editing the long form documentary for my Master’s project, I also was assistant editor on a feature-length film by another MA Directing student. Due to the tight deadlines of the MA course, post-production was taking place at the same time as production, so myself and the other editor would receive rushes straight off set and prepare rough assemblies of scenes for the directors viewing the next day. This gave me experience of working on new scenes every day and managing my time to also film and edit the documentary on Fearless Vampire Killers.
Working on the Fearless Vampire Killers documentary gave me a new perspective on the editor’s role in production, as I was acting as assistant director, co-producer and cameraman, I was able to see the advantages and disadvantages of how these on set experiences affects the Editor’s point-of-view while in post-production. On set I was able to use my editing intuition to film cutaways and get the best angles that would be useful in the edit, while mentally working out the story of the film while it was being shot. I did however experience moments in post-production where my vision was hindered by my familiarity of being on set and knowing the subjects in a social context.
I am a keen learner and reliable with good time management. From my undergraduate study and acquiring a place to study Editing at Bournemouth University I am extremely self motivated in working in the film industry. I handle criticism very well, and am always looking to improve.
