About me
Currently completing professional training in Geneva, I am focusing on classical and contemporary dance techniques (alongside training in pointe work, hip hop, modern-jazz, pilates and partnerwork) with a strong focus on stage and performance practice. My classical training began at the age of five with teachers from Vaganova, Legat and French schools and has developed to enable me to perform neoclassical work with Fabio Lopez. Being part of National Dance Company Wales’ Associate programme and projects with National Youth Dance Wales gave me a strong foundation in basic contemporary techniques. At DanceArea Geneva, I have built on this foundation by broadening my exposure to a range of styles and repertoire including pieces incorporating flamenco and kathak influences (namely, Sam created by Jose Agudo for Area Jeune Ballet) as well as more neoclassical work such as the neoclassical piece Cage of Gods created by Fabio Lopez.Spending my childhood living in both China and Europe has created a love for travelling and culture and a will to understand and interact with people from all backgrounds, enriching my practice both in the studio and in forming a creative mindset and open outlook as an artist in daily life. Investing time in sketching, crocheting, learning the languages of those I’m living with (including French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese) and reading about the exciting discoveries made in psychology in recent years gives me inspiration and ideas to draw upon and propose when creating new works. Dancing recently in Gil Carlos Harush’s ‘Kiss and Fly’ (a piece based heavily on Donald Winnicott’s ‘holding environment’ concept) has been especially important in opening my eyes to the power dance can have in portraying ideas about the interactions between people. Combined with my understanding and love of music, reinforced by my learning to play the violin from a young age, this interest in topical issues of the modern world creates an endless fountain of inspiration to use as a dancer. I love to use these experiences and passions to explore the capabilities of my own body but also to discover the possibilities of two bodies working together whether that’s in improvisation, technique or creation.
