Commission Rates

I've recently started talking to a couple of Agents about representing me. I've managed to get moderately steady work on my own, but think it's a good idea for me to get an agent.

What are people's experiences when it comes to commission rates?

I've had a couple of Agents quote me a 20% commission, which in my opinion seems a bit steep. I thought general rule of thumb was agents took between 10-15% but is that just me being optimistically naive?

Also what are peoples experiences when it comes to commission on pre-established relationships / finding your own work?

I know a few people who don't pay any commission in this case, and others who do. And I can see reasoning on both sides of the argument. But how common is it for the former?

10-15 is standard, a usual split for theatre/filmTV/commercial. Commercials can be a lot higher, up to 20% is unfortunately not that uncommon any more, though rarely at the higher-end companies.

Yes that was my concern, good to know I'm not crazy!
I know some tend to charge up to an extra 20% as well when a buy-out is involved!

I just don't want to sign away half of my pay-check to commission and tax!!

10-20 is standard for film and tv at all level of agency and usually 10 for theatre as it’s less well paid.

Second part is your own relationship. Should be established in the meeting. In my opinion an agent who wants a percentage on £70 for a student film is probably a red flag. You’re only going to be doing that low pay work if you have nothing else and the agent should realise this and not claim on such work as they should have plenty of good clients who bring in the big money. They should be focusing on you being seen as much as possible.

Industry rates are around 12.5 for theatre
15-20 for commercial/TV and film.
Some commercials have the extra 20 added on top so you may get full fee in some instances. Not sure about VO/Radio as it varies.
