Is Mandy's New Demo Upload System Making Anyone Else's Demos Sound Tinny Once Converted?
Is it just me or is this new upload system making everyone else's demos sound awful once they've been converted too? I've tried MP3's and Ultra HQ Wav file formats now and both come out sounding like it's been recorded on a homemade tin can mic instead of a Sennheiser!

Editorial Comment Hello everyone,

The feature is set up to record at technical specifications which are sufficient to allow employers to sample your vocal quality and make a casting decision. This means you may therefore see a slight difference if you are uploading a higher quality file.

If you would like to include further links to examples of your work and specific recording quality samples, please do feel free to include further links in your cover letter or alternatively direct the employer to view your profile for further samples.

Please do get back in contact if we can support you with anything else.

All the best,

Mandy Admin

Yes same here. I have highlighted it with Mandy. Interestingly if you listen through a computers build it speaker it doesn't sound bad, but definitely distorted listening through headphones and interface

Hi Kelly, I actually think that might depend on the tones of a specific persons voice, being a man with a deep register, this new conversion system makes my voice sound very thin and extremely tinny, even more so than usual loss in richness you get sound through low quality in built speakers rather than using proper monitors or headphone.
I've only just seen Mandy's response comment to my post and I really don't think that's good enough. I fear they are trying to fix something that wasn't broken!
And I can't speak for anyone else, but I certainly won't be using this new "Record On the Site" feature, rather than my own DAW where I can edit and clean up the takes to send in a professional demo... I mean who is that feature for?!?

I totally agree with this. I hate the new feature. It makes the audio sound completely unprofessional and like it was recorded on a mobile phone. When employers are making casting decisions, surely they are taking quality of audio into account as well as voice. I think this new feature needs to be changed immediately.

From my emails with mandy, they have listened to the audio and cant hear a difference apparently! They are happy that it doesn't distort. Really interesting that a few people are reporting on this. I can hear the distortion if Iisten through my interface and headphones but not so much if Iisten directly through the computers built in speakers. Still dont think its the best way to go forward.

I can hear the distortion on both, but more so on the computer speakers. Either way, the sound quality is much worse

Yes, sounds horrid through my headphones; wonder what weird conversion they're doing to files to make them sound so tinny?

I think the new system is greatly lowering the bit depth of the uploaded file, as Mandy claim it maintains the same sample rate as the original recording... but I'm not entirely sure I believe that. It may also be an issue to do with the conversion in to a MP4 format?

Anyway, this is what Mandy has said about the new system.
"On desktop computers and laptops:
The Flash client will record audio using NellyMoser's ASAO codec at 44.1 kHz in a .flv container. This is converted to AAC at 44.1 kHz in an .mp4 file.
The HTML5 client will record audio using Opus codec at 48 kHz in a .webm container. We convert it to AAC at 48 kHz in an .mp4 file.
On mobile devices:
When recording audio from mobile devices a wide range of containers and audio codecs will be used depending on the device and Android version. As of now the following codecs and containers are supported.
CONTAINER AUDIO CODEC
mp3 mp3
m4a aac
3gp amr-nb
3gpp amr-nb
3gpp2 amr-nb
aac aac
All of them are converted to .mp4 files with AAC while keeping the original sampling frequency."

I really hope they either reverse the roll out of this terrible new system or actually fix it so it's make our demos sound total garbage anymore!
