He always came round the dressing rooms on the first night of West End productions and, no matter whether famous or non-famous, he had warm words for all!
A true gent, no affectations...just a solid guy with integrity.
Good actors are usually pleasant people...they have nothing to prove...such was he!

I was thrilled to see him on stage in London Assurance at the National not so long ago. I'm so sad to hear this news. What a wonderful actor he was. I grew up with him on my TV and radio, he was always somewhere in my life. He was (and still is) the best ever Bertie Wooster.

I too was saddneed to hear of his passing. He was a very fine actor, equally in serious drama and comedy.

His presence on my telly box will be sorely missed, he seemed like such a nice guy, so Nigel it's nice to hear from you that he genuinely was.
I was watching the film version of hamlet with him as polonius the night before he passed, so sad to think he won't be any more wonderful work from him.

(P.s sorry if spelling is bad, I'm dyslexic, not helped by phone)

I saw him at the Riverside, in Kenneth Brannagh's Twelfth Night, the ease with which he moved from tragedy to comedy allowed him to be the most wonderful Malvolio.
