Highlights
-
I started acting when I was young and would impersonate characters I saw on films or interesting people I met in real life. In High School a teacher saw me doing these impersonations and advised me to take Drama as I had a talent for it. She said 'Conor was born to perform'. When studying the process, technique and craft involved with acting I really found my passion for it. The first performance I took part in was in High School when I played Scullery in 'Road'. Since then I have been involved in productions by performing, writing or just 'sitting in' on rehearsals to get a better understanding of how different plays are created.
I graduated from Newcastle performance academy in 2013 with a First Class BA (hons) Degree in Contemporary Acting. Since then I have dedicated my time to study closely with a number of acting professionals around the UK. During this period I underwent intensive training focusing on a variety of acting styles for both stage and screen. These included: 'The Stanislavski System' and Lee Strasberg's 'Method', Jacques Lecoq's 'Clowning', 'Mime' and 'Neutral Mask', Rudolph Laban's 'Movement Analysis', Jerzy Grotowski's 'Exercises' and Bertolt Brecht's use of physicality, stereotypes and writing. I took the valuable knowledge and skills I learnt from this training into my professional performance practice.
I performed in theatre productions around Newcastle upon Tyne, productions included: 'Taming of the Shrew' (Curtis); 'The Hour Before' (Michael Boyle); 'The Death of Sophie Kane' (Daniel) and 'Education for the Educated' (James); the latter I wrote and directed. This was performed at The Theatre Royal Newcastle and one reviewer wrote "Conor Lowson is a young performer to watch out for in the future". My most valuable experience in theatre to date, was also my most challenging project; a performance 'Being' which I wrote, directed and performed in. 'Being' toured nationally as part of 'The Big Theatre Campaign', a tour I produced entailing 100 performances. The tour picked up national media attention. The experience I gained from working on all these productions helped me learn new skills and motivated me to continue developing as a professional.
I wrote, directed and performed the lead role in a short film called 'Broken' which was shown at Newcastle's Empire Cinema in 2012. This was my first experience of working on film. It was this project in particular that inspired me to train more in screen acting and continue to work more within film. I took this motivation and the skills I learnt on 'Broken' into my next project dedicating a year to writing and creating a showcase of five short films, each performed and created using different styles thus requiring a different approach and process. I performed the lead role in each and worked closely with the director and technical team so I could gain a full understanding of how a film is created as well as developing my performance technique. These films picked up media attention in 'Teaching Drama' magazine and 'The Stage' newspaper. The skills learned from this experience have provided me with the platform to take the next step in my development as an actor.
Alongside acting I facilitate workshops on theatre practitioner techniques. I find this an extremely beneficial way of developing my communication skills and refreshing my own knowledge and acting skill whilst I am not performing.
I want to continue to develop further and learn more from working with new people and gaining new artistic experiences.
