About me
Rebecca [they / them] is an interdisciplinary theatre director, dramaturg, writer, researcher, and critical practitioner. They are currently the artistic director of from (a)basement theatre collective, and an award-winning graduate from Royal Holloway (University of London) with a First Class Honours degree in Drama and Philosophy. Passionate about celebrating the diverse narratives around them, Rebecca's work straddles cultures, genres, and borders. They have trained and worked internationally with artists and organisations in Poland, Germany, Singapore, India, the Czech Republic, and the UK. Their productions have been commissioned at venues such as the Rose Theatre in Kingston, the King's Head Theatre in London, and the iconic Substation Theatre. Equipped with years of experience as an actor trainer and theatre facilitator, Rebecca believes in social advocacy and debate through the arts, and grounding meaningful collaborations as the heart of their practice. With the Gesamtkunstwerk at its core, Rebecca’s creative ethos is based on hybrid processes of excavation, empowerment, and experimentation — with a particular focus on physical theatre, site-responsive / multimedia storytelling, the aesthetics of critique and (re)imagination, immersive documentary performance, and the intersections of philosophy and science / technology.
Their work has been described as "experimental theatre at its best", with cleverly created subtleties and brave staging choices.
