Agents

Hello,

I'm new to voice over and just trying to find my way through the woods after being furloughed from my former staff job!!

I was wondering if you can advise me about agents i.e should I get one and if so how do I go about that? What are the pros and cons, average fees etc?

Any advice and recommendations would be warmly welcomed.

Very best wishes,

Carson

P.S It really is lovely to be part of this supportive community!

Hi Carson,
If you are just starting out then an agent doesn’t need to be your priority. The most important thing is gaining as much experience/training as possible. Gravy for the Brain are a great resource for finding out everything about the world of VO. Check them out. The best order is training (Which is always ongoing, you never stop learning new stuff) / then professional produced demos/work and THEN an agent. But in today’s world agents aren’t the be all and end all. Most of the work you get will be through your own client list that you build up and referrals from other VOs and P2Ps if you subscribe to those. But you can only expect to get a handful of jobs per year via an agent.
Anyhow, wishing you every success. As you say the VO community is a lovely and supportive one and there are always people who will help you on your journey :-)

Hi Carson

Absolutely ditto Ruth's response. Gravy for the Brain is a perfect starting point.

I've been going 3 years, full time for around 8 months, all with no agent. I've pondered it, but I remain to be convinced that an agent will bring genuine value over and above what I'm achieving already.

But a definite recommendation from me as well to build a solid foundation first of experience, skill and track record. I'm also sure that unless you're an established/known actor already, any agent won't be interested in you until you have a track record anyway.... after all, they need to make sure you're going to win work for them too!

Best of luck.

Hi Consuelo,

P2P stands for 'Pay to Play' sites such as Mandy, Voices.com etc. I think it should be P2W personally. Pay to Work!!
Best wishes,
Carson
