Feature Film vs Holiday

Chris Bain
Actor

Hey all,

So I don't normally post in the forums but usually read the various topics with great interest and it's clear that amongst the actors on this site you have some great experience and offer great advice. I need some of that advice now.

Recently my hardworking agent managed to land me a role in an hotly anticipated feature film shooting shortly. The conundrum that I face is that I have booked and paid for a family holiday to Florida and New York which coincides with the shooting dates. Basically I can either go on holiday or do the film - I cannot do both. Also, due to the size of the production there's no way the dates can be altered in any way, shape or form.

A few notes about my role: it's basically a featured role, no lines but I appear in key scenes, the character is named and will appear in the credits and IMDB too.

The thing is, I have just completed my first year acting professionally and I believe that this is a big opportunity for me and the benefits of doing this could be massive. However, saying that, the holiday is a one off and something I have saved for for the best part of a year.

I genuinely have no idea what to do. So over to you, the talented people of CCP, what would you do?

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and all the best,

Chris.

I haven't read all of these but the flipping of the coin is something i do. Sort of like Two-Face but where you bottle it and don;t go with the option. Ha. But it does tell you how you feel. In my first year of acting i had to prepare my sister for the possibility of me not being available to attend her wedding. She go married in December which was panto season, a pretty lucrative time of year for an actor. She got engaged in my last year at drama school so the possibility was always. I did get a job and before accepting it, made sure she understood. Luckily i was able to do both in the end.

My point though is that now I've been a professional for nearly 10 years my outlook is different. I know longer feel every offer of work HAS to be accepted and I know longer feel like I owe the fates everything every time I get an opportunity. Had I done the 3 month job and not gone to my sister's wedding, i would have regretted it because my respect for the company is different now I have experience. If this company offered me work again and it clashed with a holiday I'd say, "see you time and all the best".

My point is opportunities are important but so is living your life as well. You'll get experience on a set and credits on sites but these are all pretty superficial. The real importance is if you'll be meeting producers etc who may give you your next job and the hard truth is they want be scouting for talent amongst the non-speaking roles! That might seem negative but they would luck more than anything. Basically, drama school is well hard and once the work starts coming in you won't be going anywhere. Go on hols with the fam! If the film bombs or your scene is edited out you'll hate it.

Peace.

Go on holiday. I turned down a film cameo in Rome to go on holiday to New York - worked in the US for six years as a result
