This weekend will see me film a series of comedy sketches I have been writing and developing for the best part of 8 months. We have a fantastic team on board but this afternoon our sound recordist had to drop out as he was offered paid work this weekend and I cant say I blame him as money is money after all. If anybody knows a sound recordist who has there own kit and is willing to work for free in the Glasgow area this weekend then I would be gratefull if you could put them in touch with myself.
My e-mail address is roasted.comedy@googlemail.com.
Thanks for your reply splatcat. I have pretty broad shoulders so if anybody wants to have a go at me for not paying people working on this project then feel free. This is a project where nobody is getting paid. If people dont want to work for free then they dont need to get in contact with me. Everybody involved in the project is mainly looking for experience and that includes the director who is flying up to Scotland from London to this.
"Co-conspirators"! Oh yeah without sin cast the first stone, guys!!
I've been sitting back watching this and splat set an unfirtunate tone with his first reposnse. All Grant is doing is putting some of the sketches he's written onto tape so all concerned can get some showreel material, some more experience and not feel like they are doing nothing to forward their careers! If that's a crime then we are all guilty and therefore shouldn't be taking cheap shots at him!
The amount of actors I listen to bitching and moaning about not having any work but aren't willing or able to get up off their arses and make things happen for themselves, like Grant is trying to do, is becoming very tiring guys!
I know loads of plumbers, gardeners, carpenters, electricians, doctors, bus conductors, roadsweepers, MPs,traindrivers who are desperate to find work for nothing. They might even pay you for the pleasure of flying up to Scotland to work for free!!
I can't believe there is a post like this on here after all the discussion about film makers wanting actors and crew to work for nothing.
It's taking the piss!
Splat! You're initial post set the tone and others have joined the bandwagon!
Clive! He is not running a professional or amateur theatre company! He simply asked for some help putting some sketches on tape! A collaborative project so to speak!
Des! What is taking the piss is a fellow actor getting pilloried for trying to be proactive!
Nobody has a go at anyone setting up a profit share theatre production or casting for a LB deferred payment film!
If CCP has become a place for moaners and wingers to take cheap shots at fellow actors then its a really sad reflection of our industry!
Eh..Clive, I am not looking for actors, its a sound recordist so jump back on that horse you rode in on and come back you actually read my posting. Oh and Des, I do not give a fook about previous postings. All I care about is my project and was looking for some help and advice. If you cant give that and want to have a dig at me then you can join Clive on his horse. You would make a lovely couple.
Stick to your guns mate. I do a very similar thing and getting together with like-minded people to work collaboratively is VERY different to having a fully funded production and not paying certain people; thereby taking advantage of them. Indeed, a great deal of my paid work has come on the back of making my own luck. To get paid work as a comedian I did endless 'open mic' spots and I was happy to do so.
Anyone comparing the performance industry to that of a bus conductor is so far off the mark it is laughable. Acting, first and foremost, is a passion. It's something we do because we love it. We then pursue it and try and make a career out of it if we are good enough. If you were to compare it to any other industry it would have to be something like football. Wayne Rooney had a passion for the game and got noticed by practising hard and making that first step by simply knocking a ball about with his mates. What we do is similar, to get noticed we have to get out there and practise! It is no use sitting on our arses waiting for Hollywood/ Man Utd to call!!
Good luck Grant!
Ps I don't know a sound recordist in your area, sorry!
I'm sorry if I've offended anybody. For those of you who don't know me, I'm considered one of life's helpers. Certainly not a whinger who sits on their arse all day moaning about being out of work, as somebody mentioned in their comment. I have even set-up my own little theatre company to create (paid) work for actors. Had I been able to think of a sound recordist to recommend to Grant, I would have willingly passed on that info. As I didn't, I wished him luck instead. Since then, Grant's Director has written me a private msg - none too happy about me posting my "negative comment", as it were. I think I most have written 1 line in my first comment, followed by a smiley. Sorry that I've obviously offended him too! Can I just say that I'm doing a comedy sketch at the New End this evening, which is for a friend of mine and is unpaid. That was my choice, although I try not to make a habit of accepting unpaid work as a rule. I rest my case. Good luck with your project. I genuinely mean that.
Filming starts in 3 hours. Everything is in place. Thanks to everyone for their comments and personal messages and I hope Nadias comedy work tonight goes well. I will be taking no further part in this discussion. Cheers, Grant
Me thinks the distinction is starting to become clear.
I know which one I'll always be choosing (aside from fully paid of course!)
And have it in writing too.
